“What trap?”

“Every disagreement becomes choosing sides.”

He glanced toward me.

“I am finally choosing what is right.”

Jessica’s face reddened.

“You’re destroying our marriage.”

“No.”

His voice remained quiet.

“We already damaged it.”

I stepped back.

This no longer belonged entirely to me.

I had spent the afternoon believing Matthew lacked courage.

Now I saw something more complicated.

He had surrendered small decisions until surrender became his normal language.

That did not excuse him.

It explained him.

There was a difference.

Jessica looked at me.

“You must be thrilled.”

“No.”

“Your son is humiliating me.”

“You humiliated me at my front door.”

“I was protecting our home.”

“This has never been your home.”

Her mouth twisted.

“There.”

I held her gaze.

“You wanted honesty.”

“You never accepted me.”

“I welcomed you every Christmas.”

“Because Matthew asked.”

“I helped with your apartment deposit.”

“So you could control us.”

“I gave you twelve thousand dollars.”

Jessica blinked.

Matthew looked surprised.

“You told me it was eight.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

Jessica’s face changed.

“Don’t.”

Matthew turned.

“You said Mom gave eight thousand.”

“That was the portion we used.”

“Where did the rest go?”

“This is unrelated.”

He stared at her.

“Where did it go?”

She crossed her arms.

“Bills.”

“What bills?”

“Our bills.”

“You told me the credit cards were paid.”

“They mostly were.”

Matthew closed his eyes.

I felt the tension change again.

This was deeper than the house.

Yet I refused to let the moment become random.

The house remained the center.

Matthew opened his eyes.

“We’re leaving.”

Jessica laughed.

“No, we are not.”

“Yes.”

“You don’t get to decide that alone.”

“You decided we were moving in.”

“We agreed.”

“I agreed to stay temporarily.”

“You brought boxes.”

“Because you told me we would talk to Mom.”

“I was going to.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow.”

“After she was supposed to return.”

Jessica turned toward me.

“Fine.”

Her voice became cold.

“You want us gone?”

“Yes.”

“You’ll lose him.”

I glanced at Matthew.

He looked wounded.

Then something steadied in his expression.

“No,” he said.

Jessica stared.

He continued.

“You don’t get to threaten her with me.”

“I’m not threatening anyone.”

“You just did.”

“She knows exactly what she’s doing.”

“So do I.”

He reached for the box marked GEORGE.

“What are you doing?” Jessica asked.

“Putting Dad’s things back.”

My throat tightened.

Jessica laughed in disbelief.

“Right now?”

“Yes.”

“We have nowhere to go.”

“We have an apartment.”

“The lease ends next month.”

“Then we have an apartment for another month.”

“And after that?”

“We figure it out.”

“You said we couldn’t afford another place.”

“We can afford not to steal one.”

The sentence silenced her.

I looked at my son.

There was no triumph in his face.

Only shame and determination.

He lifted the box.

“Where do you want this?”

I swallowed.

“Upstairs.”

He nodded.

He carried it toward the steps.

Jessica blocked him.

“Matthew.”

He stopped.

“Move.”

Her eyes widened.

I recognized the echo immediately.

It was the same word I had used at the front door.

The power had changed hands.

Jessica recognized it too.

Her expression crumpled for one second.

Then anger returned.

“You’re going to regret this.”

“Maybe.”

“You think she’ll forgive you?”

Matthew looked toward me.

“I don’t expect her to.”

That answer reached somewhere deep.

He looked back at Jessica.

“I’m helping because it’s right.”

She moved aside.

Matthew carried the box upstairs.

I remained in the basement.

Jessica stood across from me.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, she said, “You won.”

“No.”

Her laugh was hollow.

“Of course you did.”

“This is not a contest.”

“It always was with you.”

“I did not know there was a contest.”

“You had everything.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“A house.”

I waited.

“Security.”

I continued waiting.

“A husband who adored you.”
