“Excuse me?” Davis sputtered, taking a step back as if I had struck him.

Richard let out a harsh, barking laugh. “She really has lost her mind. Call the cops, Davis. Get this trash out of here.”

I kept my gaze fixed on the headmaster. “Have you ever wondered, William, why the brass plaque in the main administration hall reads ‘Dedicated by the Vance Foundation’? Have you ever questioned who exactly owns Lot 9, the ground this prestigious academy was built upon forty years ago?”

Davis frowned, the anger in his eyes flickering with the first shadow of genuine confusion. “The Vance Trust is our landlord. What does that have to do with you stealing a phone and harassing a student?”

“It has everything to do with it,” I replied, taking a slow step forward. The boys in Richard’s group subtly stepped back. There was something in my posture, an absolute lack of fear, that began to unnerve them.

I reached up to the collar of my worn shirt. My fingers caught the delicate gold chain, and I pulled it free, letting the heavy gold signet ring drop against my chest. The sunlight caught the intricate, unmistakable crest of the Vance Trust—the same crest carved into the stone above the school’s library, the same crest printed on the headmaster’s lease agreements.

Davis stared at the ring. His mouth opened, but no sound came out. The blood began to drain from his face as his mind desperately tried to reject the impossible data it was receiving.

“My name is Eleanor Vance,” I said, my voice ringing out with absolute clarity. “And I did not steal this phone. It belongs to me. Just as the land beneath your feet belongs to me. Just as the building you sit in belongs to me.”

“That’s… that’s impossible,” Davis whispered, his hands trembling. He looked from my faded clothes to the heavy gold ring. “Mrs. Vance is a recluse. She lives in the city…”

“I live wherever my assets require observation,” I corrected him sharply. I turned my head, fixing my gaze on Richard, whose arrogant sneer had finally begun to crack, replaced by a look of wild, defensive panic. “And my assets at Green Hill required very close observation.”

“You’re lying!” Richard shouted, his voice shrill. He pointed a shaking finger at the ring. “That’s a fake! You bought it at a pawn shop to try and scare us! My father is Charles Sterling! We own this town! We own Green Hill!”

As if summoned by the desperate invocation of his family’s name, Richard’s phone began to vibrate violently in his hand.

He looked down at the screen. The caller ID flashed wildly. MOM.

Richard hesitated, his chest rising and falling rapidly. He glanced at me, then at Davis, before swiping the screen and holding the phone to his ear.

“Mom? What is it, I’m dealing with a crazy person at school—”

He stopped.

The silence that followed was the most profound I had ever witnessed. Because the parking lot was so quiet, the frantic, hysterical voice of Richard’s mother bled through the phone’s earpiece, audible to Trent, Chase, and the headmaster.

“Richard! Where are you?” The voice was sobbing, a chaotic edge of raw terror tearing through her words. “You need to come home right now! No, wait, you can’t come home! They’re taking it!”

“Mom, calm down, what are you talking about?” Richard stammered, his bravado entirely vanishing. His face turned the color of ash. “Who is taking what?”

“The Trust!” his mother wailed. A loud crash echoed through the phone line in the background, followed by a man shouting orders. “The Vance Trust! They canceled the hundred-year lease! Your father went to the bank, and they seized his accounts! The parent company is liquidating everything, Richard!”

Richard staggered back, hitting the side of his beloved Ferrari. He gripped the roof of the car for support. “Mom, that’s impossible. We own Green Hill. Dad said the extension was guaranteed!”

“We don’t own the land, Richie! We never did!” She was crying so hard she was choking on her words. “There are sheriffs here! Lawyers! They’re dragging our furniture out onto the lawn! Your father just collapsed… the paramedics are trying to stabilize his heart!”

“Mom…” Richard whispered, his eyes wide and unseeing.
