“The woman… the woman who runs the Trust,” his mother sobbed, her voice breaking into a terrified shriek. “The lawyers said she initiated it personally. They said she was at Oakridge! Richie, you have to find her! Ask Davis, ask the board! Find Eleanor Vance and beg her! Beg her to stop!”

The call dropped, leaving a hollow, dead tone buzzing in the afternoon air.

Richard’s hand slowly fell to his side. The phone slipped from his loose grip, clattering against the asphalt. He slowly lifted his head, his terrified, bloodshot eyes locking onto my face.

He looked at my gray clothes. He looked at the dust his car had thrown onto my shoes. He looked at the empty plastic bottles scattered between us, the trash he had ordered me to pick up.

He realized exactly who I was. And he realized exactly what he had just done.

Trent and Chase backed away from Richard as if he were suddenly radioactive. They didn’t say a word, but the shift in power was instantaneous. Richard was no longer a billionaire heir. He was a trespasser holding a set of keys to a kingdom that had just evaporated.

“You…” Richard breathed, his voice barely a rasp. “You did this.”

“I merely accelerated the inevitable,” I said calmly, feeling no pity as I looked at the broken boy leaning against the car.

Headmaster Davis’s own phone began to ring. He pulled it from his pocket with shaking hands, staring at the screen. It was the Chairman of the Oakridge Board of Directors.

The reversal was absolute. The pressure that had been designed to break me had instead shattered the Sterling empire entirely.

Davis looked at the phone, then slowly up at me, his eyes wide with profound, career-ending horror.

CHAPTER 4

The reality of the moment descended upon the parking lot with the heavy, inescapable weight of an avalanche.

Headmaster Davis fumbled his phone, nearly dropping it before pressing it to his ear. “Y-Yes, Mr. Chairman?”

I didn’t need to hear the other side of the conversation. I watched Davis’s posture physically crumble. His shoulders slumped, his knees gave a slight buckle, and his mouth fell open in an expression of silent devastation. He nodded mechanically several times, murmuring, “Yes, sir. I understand. Immediately, sir.”

He lowered the phone, his face glistening with a fresh sheen of cold sweat. He turned to me, his hands clasped nervously in front of his chest, resembling a man standing before a firing squad.

“Mrs. Vance,” Davis whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form the words. The condescension was gone, replaced by a desperate, groveling terror. “The Board has been informed of your… your presence on campus. They offer their deepest apologies for any distress you may have experienced. They have informed me that my contract is currently under emergency review.”

“It should be, William,” I replied, my voice steady and unyielding. “A man who automatically protects wealth over basic human dignity has no business shaping the minds of the next generation. Lot 9’s lease is secure, for the school’s sake. But your tenure as Headmaster is over. You will clear out your office by five o’clock.”

Davis closed his eyes, a single tear escaping down his cheek, but he didn’t argue. He knew fighting the Vance Trust was like trying to argue with the tide. He nodded brokenly and backed away, retreating toward the administration building a defeated man.

I turned my attention back to Richard.

He was still leaning against the Ferrari, hyperventilating slightly. The arrogant smirk that had defined his existence was gone, wiped away and replaced by the primal fear of a child who had lost his home in the dark.

“Why?” Richard choked out, his voice cracking. Tears of panic welled in his eyes. “Why would you do this? My father worked his whole life to build our company! You destroyed my family because of a parking space?!”
