With dirty, trembling fingers, the girl reached into the torn, oversized front pocket of her burlap dress.

"My mom said..." she murmured, her voice wavering, "...give this to the man with white hair."

She drew out a square of coarse, weathered linen, tied with a fraying piece of twine. The fabric was stained with oil and rain, yet she handled it as if it were sacred scripture. Slowly, carefully, her tiny thumbs peeled back the edges of the cloth.

Under the harsh glare of the chandeliers, a flash of pure, celestial blue ignited.

Resting inside the cloth was a diamond of monumental proportions. It was a flawless, cushion-cut blue diamond, set in an intricate platinum band engraved with delicate ivy leaves and a crest that had not been seen in public for nearly a quarter of a century. The gem did not merely reflect the room’s lights—it seemed to burn with an internal, electric sapphire fire, casting razor-sharp flares of blue across Arthur’s tailored suit and the silver cutlery.

Gasps echoed across the banquet hall. Several jewelry merchants and antique collectors at the neighboring tables stood up involuntarily, their eyes bulging.

Arthur Vance stopped breathing. The blood drained entirely from his face, leaving his skin as pale as his snow-white hair. His eyes widened into sheer, paralyzing shock.

He knew that ring.

He had designed every curve of the platinum ivy band with his own hands twenty-five years ago. He had mined that rare blue diamond in South Africa, cut it to absolute perfection, and placed it upon the ring finger of the only woman he had ever truly loved—Clara.

Clara.

Thirty years ago, Clara had been the light of his life, an artist of unyielding grace and fiery spirit. But Arthur had been weak, bound by the ruthless expectations of his aristocratic dynasty. When his family had plotted to ruin Clara, framing her for a betrayal she never committed, Arthur had hesitated. In his hesitation, he had failed to protect her. Believing Arthur had chosen his wealth over her, Clara had vanished into the shadows of the world, disappearing completely with the ring—and, unbeknownst to him at the time, carrying their unborn legacy.

For three decades, Arthur had spent millions searching for Clara across the globe, only to be met with dead ends, forged reports, and silence. He had believed she was dead. He had believed the ring was lost beneath the ocean of time.

And now, here it was. Resting inside a rag in the hands of a starving child.

Arthur’s hands shook so violently that the linen cloth trembled as he took it into his palms. The cold metal of the platinum burned against his skin like liquid fire. Tears, hot and uncontrollable, welled in the old man's eyes and broke across his weathered cheeks.

"Where..." Arthur’s voice broke into a ragged, guttural whisper, devoid of all prestige and power. "Where is your mother?"
