The little girl looked up into the weeping eyes of the most powerful man in the city. Her chin quivered, and she uttered six words that shattered Arthur Vance’s soul into dust:
"She said... you left us here."
Chapter IV: Into the Freezing Rain
The words echoed off the vaulted ceiling like a death sentence.
You left us here.
Every ounce of Arthur’s legendary composure disintegrated. The ballroom, the champagne, the millions in deals waiting to be signed, the socialites staring in slack-jawed astonishment—none of it existed anymore. The illusion of his golden world collapsed into utter irrelevance.
"No..." Arthur choked out, falling to one knee before the child so he was at her eye level. "No, my sweet girl... I looked for you. I looked for her every single day..."
He took her small, frozen hands into his large, trembling palms. He wrapped the linen carefully around the ring, placed it securely inside his breast pocket against his heart, and gently lifted the girl into his arms.
"Arthur!" Lady Evelyn shrieked, standing up with a look of pure horror. "What are you doing? Have you lost your mind? The press is outside! The governor is arriving in ten minutes!"
Arthur turned his head. His eyes, burning through a veil of tears, were so fiercely cold that Evelyn took an involuntary step back and shut her mouth.
"Let the whole city burn," Arthur said softly, his voice vibrating with absolute finality. "None of it matters without them."
Turning his back on the banquet, on the elite of the city, and on thirty years of meaningless vanity, Arthur Vance carried the child through the aisle. The guests parted like the Red Sea, terrified and spellbound. He ignored the whispers, the clicking of cameras from the journalists near the foyer, and the bewildered security guards.
He pushed through the heavy mahogany doors and stepped out into the biting winter storm.
The icy rain lashed against his face, soaking his tuxedo and chilling his bones, but he held the little girl tightly against his chest, shielding her with his woolen jacket.
"Show me," Arthur pleaded, the rain mixing with the tears on his face. "Tell me where she is, little one. Take me to your mother."
