“He owns this aircraft,” Eleanor said. “He owns the aircraft parked beside it. He owns the hangar you walked through this morning, the charter company that signs your checks, and the fleet you have been trusted to fly.”

For the first time, Rick Cobb looked less like a captain and more like a man watching the floor disappear beneath him.

The flight attendant covered her mouth.

The technician on the stairs stared.

Rick’s eyes snapped back to Marcus, searching now, desperate to rearrange reality into something survivable.

Marcus said nothing.

That silence was worse than any insult.

Rick swallowed. “I—I wasn’t informed.”

“No,” Eleanor said. “You were not informed of something you should never have needed to know.”

Celeste closed her eyes for one second.

Ava began to cry without making noise.

Noah pressed his face into his mother’s sleeve.

Rick looked at the children, and for half a heartbeat, shame almost reached him.

Almost.

Then pride shoved it away.

“With respect,” he said stiffly, “ownership doesn’t change security protocol.”

Marcus’s voice was low. “You didn’t ask for identification.”

Rick looked at him.

“You didn’t check the manifest,” Marcus continued. “You didn’t call operations. You didn’t verify anything. You saw my family and decided we were the threat.”

Rick’s hands curled.

Eleanor turned to the flight attendant. “Lena, please escort Mrs. Ellison and the children to the lounge.”

Celeste stood. “No.”

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice shook now, but not from weakness. From restraint. “My children were humiliated in this cabin. They will not be hidden away so adults can make this cleaner.”

Marcus looked at her, and something passed between them. A marriage’s whole language inside one glance.

Eleanor bowed her head slightly. “Of course.”

Rick’s phone buzzed in his hand.

He looked down.

A message flashed across the screen.

From: UNKNOWN NUMBER
Subject: You should have stayed quiet.

His face changed so quickly Marcus noticed.

Rick locked the phone.

But Eleanor noticed too.

“Captain,” she said, “is there something else we should know?”

“No.”

The answer came too fast.

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

Rick took a breath. “I made an error in judgment.”

Celeste laughed once. It was not amusement. It was disbelief wearing a broken coat.

“An error?” she said. “My son is six years old.”

Rick’s gaze flicked toward Noah. “I apologize if he was upset.”

“If?” Celeste whispered.

Marcus stepped forward, and the cabin seemed to shrink around him.

“No,” he said. “You don’t apologize to my children with if.”

Rick’s throat moved.

Marcus turned to Ava first. He knelt in the aisle so his eyes were level with hers. “Baby, Captain Cobb has something to say to you.”

Ava wiped her cheek with the back of her hand.

Rick’s face burned red.
