Julian’s voice lowered. “If that plane left Los Angeles, you weren’t landing in Singapore.”
Below them, Celeste looked up.
She could not hear.
But she knew.
A wife knows when the room holding her husband’s life has changed shape.
Marcus turned toward the door.
Eleanor was gone.
He ran.
This time, he ran.
Down the stairs. Across the hangar. Into the sunlight.
“Where is she?” he shouted.
Security scattered.
A mechanic pointed toward a black SUV near the far gate.
Its engine roared.
Marcus sprinted, coat flying behind him. Julian followed. Celeste screamed his name from the aircraft stairs.
The SUV shot forward.
For one terrifying second, Marcus was directly in its path.
Then another vehicle slammed sideways into it.
Metal screamed.
Glass burst.
The SUV spun and stopped hard against a concrete barrier.
Silence dropped.
Then sirens began somewhere beyond the gate.
Marcus stood in the sun, chest heaving.
The vehicle that had struck Eleanor’s SUV was an airport security truck.
Its driver’s door opened.
Captain Sofia Alvarez stepped out.
Dark hair pulled back. White pilot shirt. Steady hands.
She looked at Marcus.
“Mr. Ellison,” she said, breathing hard, “your father told me if I ever saw Eleanor run, I should stop the car.”
Marcus stared at her.
Sofia reached into her pocket and removed an old brass keychain.
A small silver airplane hung from it, scratched with years.
Marcus knew it instantly.
His father’s.
His knees almost failed.
“How do you have that?” he whispered.

Sofia’s face softened.
“Because he gave it to my mother the night before he died,” she said. “Along with a letter for you.”
Police flooded the tarmac. Security pulled Eleanor from the wrecked SUV, alive, furious, handcuffed, her perfect hair fallen across one eye. She screamed legal threats until one officer read out the federal warrant that had been waiting all morning.
Rick Cobb stood nearby, watching the empire of his certainty collapse into handcuffs and flashing lights.
Celeste reached Marcus first.
She threw her arms around him so hard he staggered.
“What happened?” she whispered.
He could not answer.
He held her. Held the children. Held all three as if the sky itself had tried to take them.
Ava pressed her face into his coat. “Daddy, can we go home?”
Marcus looked at the Gulfstream.
