"Ambush!" Grim roared, grabbing a heavy pump-action shotgun from the floor rack behind his seat. "Hold on!"
Before Miller could react, the SUV on the left slammed its reinforced steel bumper directly into the side of the truck, sending a shower of metallic sparks flying into the air. The impact nearly threw Miller out of his seat, but he fought the steering wheel, managing to keep the heavy vehicle from rolling over into the desert sand.
Through the tinted passenger window of the SUV, a masked cartel gunman raised a submachine gun and opened fire. The side window shattered into a million glittering fragments as bullets chewed through the truck's door panel, peppering the interior with lead.
"Return fire!" Grim shouted, kicking open his passenger door while the truck was still moving at high speed, leaning out into the rushing wind. He pumped the shotgun and blasted a devastating load of buckshot directly into the lead SUV's front tire.
The tire exploded with a deafening pop. The SUV lost control instantly, swerving wildly across the asphalt before flipping over twice and skidding off the road in a massive cloud of dust and shredded rubber.
But the second SUV remained relentless. It pulled aggressively in front of the truck, slamming on its brakes in an intentional brake-check designed to cause a catastrophic front-end collision. Miller slammed his foot on the brake pedal, locking up the tires, but momentum was against them. The truck plowed directly into the rear of the SUV with a sickening crunch of twisted metal.
The cab filled with the acrid smell of burning oil and airbag powder. Grim groaned, clutching a bloody shoulder where a stray bullet had grazed him, while Miller's head slumped against the steering wheel, unconscious and bleeding from a forehead laceration.
Doors slammed open from the remaining SUV. Half a dozen heavily armed cartel mercenaries poured out, rifles raised, surrounding the wrecked truck. The trap had been sprung, and the war had officially reached the doorstep of the Iron Wraiths.
CHAPTER 11: THE SIEGE AT THE OLD SAWMILL
The night sky over the desolate valley plunged into deep darkness, heavy storm clouds completely obscuring the moonlight, leaving an oppressive and chilling gloom. Inside the secluded hideout of the Iron Wraiths—an abandoned timber mill isolated deep within the ancient pine forest—a warm amber glow from a small generator-powered lamp spilled through the wire-reinforced windowpanes.
Inside, the air was thick with the scent of motor oil, aged tobacco, and the steady warmth radiating from the corner wood-burning stove. Clay paced evenly across the concrete floor, inspecting every iron door latch and defensive fortification. The rugged scars etched across his muscular frame flickered under the dancing firelight, serving as silent testaments to a lifetime spent surviving the brutal battlefields of the criminal underworld.
Rachel sat on a wooden chair near the corner, where little Lily was curled up in a thick blanket, fast asleep. The raw fear and anxiety that had gripped her back at the Red Lines diner had completely vanished. Through the crucible of this terrifying ordeal, her fear had been forged into a resilient, unyielding strength. In her hands, she held a clean rag, meticulously wiping away a speck of mud from a spare ammunition magazine as she prepared to assist Clay for the inevitable confrontation ahead.
