True to Clay's warning, twin beams of blinding headlights suddenly appeared in the distance behind them, cutting aggressively through the fog. A pair of heavy sport bikes, ridden by Enforcers belonging to the Salazar cartel, roared out from a concealed side road, closing the distance at an alarming speed. Their engines whined with high-pitched fury, a stark contrast to the deep, resonant growl of Clay’s custom chopper.

"They're gaining on us!" Rachel shouted over the wind, her voice laced with sudden panic as she saw the reflection of the headlights drawing closer in the side mirror.

"Let them try," Clay muttered coldly, his jaw tightening as he downshifted smoothly, the engine letting out a menacing roar as RPMs soared.

The chase transformed into a deadly game of cat and mouse along the winding canyon road. The cartel riders drifted dangerously close, their front wheels inches away from clipping Clay’s rear fender. One of the pursuers, a lean figure clad in black tactical gear, reached inside his jacket, pulling out a heavy steel-reinforced baton, preparing to strike and force them off the asphalt cliff.

Clay anticipated the move before it even happened. With a sudden, violent twist of the handlebars, he threw the heavy chopper into a sharp drift, sliding across the damp pavement with sparks flying where the chrome frame scraped the ground. The unexpected maneuver caught the pursuer completely off guard. The lead bike overshot, its tires locking up as the rider desperately tried to brake on the slick surface, before skidding off the road and crashing violently into a thick cluster of pine trees.

A muffled explosion of sparks and shattered plastic echoed behind them, but Clay didn't look back. There was no time for celebration. The second rider, enraged by the sudden loss of his partner, redoubled his speed, aiming directly for Clay's side in a suicide-style ramming attempt.

Clay’s expression remained ice-cold. He waited until the last possible fraction of a second, then slammed his heavy boot down on the footpeg, using his weight to tilt the massive machine into a lean so steep it defied physics. The pursuing bike zoomed past by a hair's breadth, its rider losing control momentarily as he struck the guardrail in a shower of brilliant orange sparks.

Breathing heavily, Rachel checked on Lily. The little girl blinked sleepily, completely unaware of the mortal danger they had just narrowly escaped, her head resting softly against Rachel’s chest.

"We're clear of the immediate pursuit," Clay said quietly, his voice steady as he guided the chopper off the main highway and onto an unpaved logging road half-hidden by overgrown brush. "But this is only the beginning. They know what we look like now."

Chapter 8: The Sanctuary of the Iron Wraiths

The chopper bounced roughly as it traversed the unpaved, mud-slicked trail deep inside the pine forest. The dense canopy of ancient trees blocked out the moonlight, plunging the surroundings into an almost pitch-black abyss, save for the single piercing beam of the motorcycle's headlight cutting through the mist. After twisting through a labyrinth of forgotten timber paths, the bike finally slowed down to a gentle roll, coming to a halt in front of a sprawling, dilapidated structure that resembled an old sawmill mixed with a reinforced mechanic workshop.

The building was heavily fortified, its corrugated iron walls covered in rust, and thick iron bars fitted over every window. Faint amber light glowed from a small generator-powered lamp near the loading bay. This was one of the many safehouses maintained by the Iron Wraiths—a relic of a bygone era when the motorcycle club ruled these northern territories with an iron fist before the corporate syndicates and cartel cartels tried to carve up their turf.
