"You're kidding."

"What investigation?"

"This is ridiculous."

The woman recording raised her phone higher.

Vanessa's voice remained quiet.

"You want me removed from a paid first-class seat despite confirming that my ticket is valid."

"Temporarily."

"Why?"

Melanie looked around.

She had gone too far to retreat gracefully.

Vanessa understood that type of pride.

People sometimes defended mistakes more fiercely than they defended truth.

"Because," Melanie said, "we have procedures."

"Name the procedure."

Melanie's jaw tightened.

"Ma'am—"

"Name it."

Priya stepped closer.

"There isn't one."

Melanie spun toward her.

"Stay out of this."

Priya went pale.

Vanessa studied both women.

There it was again.

Fear.

Not ordinary workplace discomfort.

Something deeper.

Melanie leaned closer to Vanessa.

"I can have airport security remove you."

Vanessa picked up her phone.

"Then call them."

That clearly wasn't the answer Melanie expected.

"What?"

"Call security."

The first-class cabin became silent.

Vanessa put her phone on the table.

"If you believe I've violated a policy, document it. Call your supervisor. Call airport security. Do everything according to the book."

Melanie stared.

Vanessa continued.

"But first, I'd like your employee number."

Melanie laughed.

Not loudly.

But enough.

"You don't need my employee number."

"I believe I do."

"Why?"

Vanessa looked directly into her eyes.

"Because I'll need it when I report this."

Melanie's smile disappeared.

"Are you threatening me?"

"No."

Vanessa folded her hands.

"I'm documenting you."

That sentence changed the energy immediately.

Passengers exchanged looks.

Priya stepped backward.

Melanie reached for the cabin phone.

"Captain, I need assistance in first class."

Vanessa looked toward the closed cockpit door.

She knew the captain.

Not personally.

But she knew his record.

Captain Eric Lawson.

Twenty-three years with Sterling.

Decorated former Air Force pilot.

Excellent safety evaluations.

Two passenger complaints in eighteen years.

Both dismissed.

If he came out and blindly supported Melanie, Vanessa's undercover inspection would become more serious than she had expected.

Melanie replaced the receiver.

"He'll deal with this."

Vanessa nodded.

"Good."

Thirty seconds passed.

Then the cockpit door opened.

Captain Lawson stepped into the cabin.

He looked irritated.

"What's going on?"

Melanie gestured toward Vanessa.

"We have a passenger refusing to cooperate with a seating verification."

Lawson looked at seat 1A.

Then at Vanessa.

His entire face changed.

He stopped walking.

Vanessa saw recognition hit him instantly.

Melanie didn't.

"Captain?"

Chapter 2 - The Red FolderNobody spoke for three seconds. Then Captain Lawson straightened."Ms. Cole."Melanie looked from him to Vanessa."Who is she?"Lawson seemed unsure whether answering would make things better or worse.Daniel Reeves stepped fully into the cabin.Vanessa's attention remained on the red folder.Sterling Airways had hundreds of executives.Only three people were authorized to access that file.Vanessa.Daniel.And General Counsel Rebecca Sloan."What are you doing here?" Vanessa asked.Daniel gave a strained smile."I could ask you the same.""You knew exactly where I was."Melanie looked confused."Mr. Reeves?"That caught Vanessa's attention.Melanie knew Daniel immediately.Daniel was rarely public-facing.Most flight attendants would recognize Vanessa before they recognized the COO.Yet Melanie had addressed him without hesitation.Vanessa turned toward her."You know him?"Melanie's face changed.Only slightly. But Vanessa saw it.Daniel stepped in."Let's move this conversation somewhere private.""No.""Vanessa—""No."The passengers were openly watching now.The woman recording had stopped pretending to hide her phone.Vanessa pointed at the folder."Why do you have that?"Daniel looked down."It's unrelated.""That's the discrimination review."Melanie's face drained of color.Vanessa noticed.Daniel noticed Vanessa noticing."Let's not discuss confidential corporate matters in front of customers," he said.Vanessa's voice became softer."Then answer one simple question. Why is a confidential internal review on my airplane?"
