“Get off the mat, Grant,” Lieutenant Ryan Brooks said with a crooked grin as he loosened his shoulders. “This isn’t a yoga class.”

The laughter arrived immediately.

It rolled through the training gym in a sharp burst, ricocheting off the concrete walls and steel lockers, carried by men and women who had trained together long enough to recognize when someone was about to become the day’s entertainment.

Olivia Grant remained at the edge of the blue combat mat with one glove only half secured.

She did not laugh.

She did not glance toward the crowd.

Instead, she tightened the strap.

On the far wall, a red digital clock glowed through the stale air of the gym. Heavy bags rocked lazily on their chains. The place smelled of rubber flooring, sweat, athletic tape, and coffee that had been sitting in a metal dispenser since early morning.

Normally, one more controlled sparring round would not have drawn much attention.

This one was different.

Almost everyone in the room had turned to look at Olivia.

Ryan Brooks stood barefoot at the center of the mat, broad across the shoulders and heavily built, wearing the casual arrogance of a man who had spent years hearing that confidence suited him.

He had already beaten two younger soldiers that afternoon.

Neither match had lasted very long.

Now Olivia’s name had appeared directly under his on the electronic pairing board.

Ryan studied the display.

Then he looked at her.

Then back at the board.

“You’re seriously doing this?”

Several soldiers laughed again.

Olivia stepped onto the mat.

She wore a plain black training shirt with gray tactical pants. No rank insignia. No unit patch. Nothing on her clothing explained why she was there or what authority she carried.

Her dark-blond hair was pulled tightly behind her head.

She seemed composed.

Not fearless.

Not furious.

Simply composed in the way of someone who had learned long ago that panic wasted oxygen and pride wasted attention.

Ryan pointed toward the pairing board.

“Who signed you up for live rounds?”

Olivia met his stare.

“I did.”

The laughter weakened.

Ryan cocked his head.

“You did?”

“Yes.”

He glanced toward the spectators to make sure they were still watching him.

Then the smile returned.

“All right. I’ll go easy on you.”

A few soldiers near the benches laughed.

Someone muttered, “Wrong lieutenant to challenge.”

Another voice answered, “This’ll be over fast.”

Olivia heard both remarks.

She gave no sign that either mattered.

Sergeant Tom Miller, the combatives instructor standing beside the mat, looked from Ryan to Olivia. His thumb rested against the timer in his hand.

“Grant.”

Olivia turned slightly.

Miller dropped his voice.

“You sure you want this?”

“Yes, Sergeant.”

Ryan bounced lightly on the balls of his feet.

“Relax,” he said. “I won’t make it too humiliating.”

The gym gradually went quiet.

A visiting captain near the wall crossed his arms over his chest.

Two instructors edged closer.

Miller lifted one hand.

“Controlled round. No cheap shots. Someone taps, it’s done.”

Ryan nodded.

Olivia did the same.

The bell rang.

Ryan exploded forward.

He moved quickly, dipping his shoulders and committing his weight in one aggressive drive. His hands reached toward Olivia’s hips, already certain they would find them.

Olivia shifted half a step.

Nothing more.

Ryan’s hands closed on empty space.

His own momentum carried him beyond her centerline.

Olivia’s left hand locked onto his wrist.

Her right forearm crossed his shoulder.

Her foot turned neatly behind his lead leg.

Ryan’s grin vanished.

For the smallest fraction of a second, confusion flashed over his face.

Then the mat disappeared beneath him.

His back hit the padding with a solid thud.

Several soldiers sucked in a breath.

Ryan twisted at once.

Olivia was already transitioning.

She moved around his shoulder, controlled his arm, slid her knee into position, and settled her weight with the smooth precision of someone who had repeated the sequence thousands of times.

Ryan tried to roll.

Nothing changed.

He pulled against the trapped arm.

It moved barely an inch.

His feet scraped uselessly across the mat.

Olivia adjusted.

Almost imperceptibly.

One tiny correction.

That was enough to seal the final gap.

The gym went silent.

Not merely quieter.

Silent.

Miller glanced at the timer.

Forty-two seconds.

Ryan’s neck muscles tightened.

He pushed harder.

His free palm pressed against the mat as he searched for leverage.

Olivia leaned slightly nearer.

“You should probably tap.”

Ryan looked up at her.

“What?”

“You should tap.”

There was no triumph in her voice.

That somehow made it worse.

Ryan planted one foot and drove his hips upward.

He gained maybe three inches.

Olivia shifted her balance.

He settled back down.

Someone near the wall whispered, “No way.”

Ryan heard it.

His expression changed.

Pride took control before judgment could.

He strained again.

Olivia did not add pressure. She did not perform for the crowd. She simply held the position.

Miller stepped closer.

“Brooks. Tap.”

Ryan clenched his jaw.

For two more seconds, he resisted.

Then his palm struck the mat.

Once.

Twice.

“Stop.”

Olivia let him go immediately.

She stood.

No celebration.

No grin.

Not even a glance toward the people watching.

Ryan remained sitting for a moment, breathing heavily.

The entire room seemed to be waiting for him to lose his temper.

Instead, something more unsettling happened.

He looked up at Olivia.

The humiliation was still there.

So was anger.

But beneath both, Olivia noticed something she had not expected.

Fear.

Ryan got to his feet slowly.

Miller checked his shoulder.

“You okay?”

Ryan pulled away.

“I’m fine.”

Then he walked close to Olivia.

From across the room, the movement looked confrontational.

Only Olivia could hear his whisper.

“You shouldn’t have done that.”

Her eyes narrowed.

Ryan’s expression stayed hard.

But what he said next was barely louder than breath.

“Now they know it’s you.”

Olivia did not follow him.
