Fourteen months.

Before Reyes vanished.

Before Shaw claimed she had selected Olivia.

Before Mercer repeatedly accessed Olivia’s file.

Miller opened the creation record.

The username was encrypted.

But the recovery email linked to the account remained visible.

One address.

Daniel whispered:

“I know that account.”

Ryan looked at him.

“Whose?”

Daniel turned toward Olivia.

His face had gone pale.

“My father’s.”

Silence.

Arturo Reyes.

The man officially dead for sixteen years.

The theorist who had created the foundation of Forty-Two.

Olivia looked at Shaw.

“You said Vance was controlling the hidden network.”

“I said we believed he was.”

“Where is Arturo Reyes?”

Shaw did not answer.

Daniel suddenly sat down.

Ryan moved beside him.

“What is it?”

Daniel looked sick.

“Four months ago, when I disappeared…”

“What?”

“I wasn’t hiding from Mercer.”

Olivia stared.

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“I was searching for my father.”

Ryan froze.

“You found him?”

Daniel nodded.

“Where?”

Daniel looked toward the blue mat.

Then toward Sergeant Miller.

Miller’s face had become completely blank.

Olivia saw it.

So did Ryan.

Daniel whispered:

“I found the man who raised me under another name.”

Nobody moved.

Miller shut his eyes.

Ryan stepped backward.

“No.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Tom.”

Miller remained silent.

Olivia felt the truth arrive before anyone explained it.

Tom Miller.

Thomas Mercer.

The old photograph.

The internal observer.

The man who claimed Arturo Reyes had sent him.

Olivia whispered:

“You weren’t sent by Arturo Reyes.”

Miller opened his eyes.

“No.”

Shaw slowly reached toward her sidearm.

Olivia lifted one hand.

“Don’t.”

Ryan stared at Miller as though the floor had disappeared.

Daniel stood.

His voice broke.

“Tell them.”

Miller looked at his son.

Then at Olivia.

Sixteen years of deception seemed to settle over his face all at once.

“My name is Arturo Thomas Reyes.”

No one breathed.

Ryan whispered:

“You’re Daniel’s father.”

“Yes.”

“You let him believe you were dead.”

Miller’s face cracked.

“I watched him stay alive.”

Daniel turned away.

Ryan instinctively followed him.

Olivia never took her eyes from Miller.

“You built Forty-Two.”

“The theory.”

“You created my profile fourteen months ago.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Mercer had discovered portions of the original architecture. Vance and I knew she would eventually identify the anchor.”

“Me.”

“Yes.”

“So you brought me here.”

“I created the conditions.”

“Shaw believed it was her choice.”

Miller glanced at the colonel.

“She received anonymous evidence that led her toward Olivia.”

Shaw’s face hardened.

“You manipulated a colonel.”

“I manipulated everyone.”

Olivia’s voice turned dangerously quiet.

“Including your own son.”

Miller flinched.

“Yes.”

Daniel turned back.

“Say it louder.”

Miller looked at him.

“I manipulated you.”

“Why?”

“To keep you alive.”

“You do not get to call that protection.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Daniel stepped toward him.

“I spent sixteen years thinking you were dead.”

Miller’s eyes filled.

“I watched every birthday.”

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

“That is supposed to make it better?”

“No.”

“You watched me graduate?”

“Yes.”

“Get promoted?”

“Yes.”

“Mom get sick?”

Miller’s expression collapsed.

“Yes.”

“And you stayed hidden.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Miller struggled to answer.

“Because Mercer wasn’t the first person who wanted Forty-Two.”

Silence filled the gym.

“Governments wanted it. Contractors wanted it. Intelligence organizations wanted it. Anybody able to identify people willing to challenge authority could either recruit those people—or remove them.”

He looked toward Olivia.

“I thought that if Arturo Reyes died, the work would die too.”

“But it didn’t.”

“No.”

“Vance continued.”

“Because he believed the detection model could protect people.”

“And you?”

Miller looked at Daniel.

“I stayed close enough to stop it if he turned out to be wrong.”

Olivia remembered everything.

Miller asking whether she was sure before the sparring round.

Miller telling Ryan to tap.
