Karen placed the complaint on the desk.

“Tell him it's urgent.”

Twenty minutes later, property manager Daniel Reed appeared.

Daniel was in his forties and had the exhausted expression of someone who had spent years dealing with people who believed every disagreement was a legal emergency.

He looked at the papers.

“What happened?”

Karen launched into her story.

“There was an unauthorized person at the pool.”

Daniel nodded.

“Was she dangerous?”

“No.”

“Was she damaging property?”

“No.”

“Was she disturbing residents?”

Karen paused.

“She was there when she wasn't supposed to be.”

Daniel sighed.

“Karen, guests are allowed.”

“Not if residents don't approve.”

“The policy doesn't say that.”

“I've lived here twelve years.”

“That doesn't change the policy.”

Karen's face hardened.

“Then perhaps you should reconsider your position.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I have friends on the board.”

Daniel remained silent.

Karen smiled.

She believed she had won.

But then Daniel said something she didn't expect.

“Actually, Karen, the board is meeting tomorrow.”

“Good.”

“You can bring your complaint.”

“I will.”

“And the association's attorney will be there.”

Karen's confidence faltered slightly.

“Why?”

“Because the association has received several complaints about how pool rules are being enforced.”

Karen stared at him.

“From whom?”

Daniel closed the folder.

“Multiple residents.”

Karen stood.

“This is ridiculous.”

“Maybe.”

Daniel looked directly at her.

“But if we're going to discuss the rules, we're going to discuss them for everyone.”

Karen left the office furious.

Outside, she noticed the young woman from the pool standing near the entrance.

The woman was talking to an elderly maintenance worker.

Karen immediately marched toward them.

“You.”

The young woman turned.

Karen pointed at her.

“You need to stay away from me.”

The woman frowned.

“I wasn't doing anything.”

“You know exactly what you did.”

“I sat by a swimming pool.”

“You embarrassed me.”

The young woman stared at her.

“You fell into the pool.”

A few people nearby laughed.

Karen's face turned red.

“You think this is a joke?”

“No.”

The young woman paused.

“I think you should stop treating everyone like they're beneath you.”

Karen stepped closer.

“And who exactly do you think you are?”

The woman smiled.

“My name is Maya.”

“That doesn't answer my question.”

“It will tomorrow.”

Karen narrowed her eyes.

“What does that mean?”

Maya simply walked away.

Karen watched her go.

For the first time, a strange feeling appeared in her stomach.

Uncertainty.

She hated it.

That evening, Karen received an email from the association.

NOTICE: SPECIAL COMMUNITY BOARD MEETING — ALL RESIDENTS WELCOME

Underneath was the agenda.

Pool access.

Association conduct.

Resident complaints.

And one final item:

Review of Association Ownership and Governance Documents.

Karen read that line twice.

Then a third time.

She couldn't explain why.

But suddenly, she was no longer sure she understood the community she had spent twelve years trying to control.

The meeting room was packed the following evening.

Residents filled every chair.

Some stood along the walls.

Others gathered outside the glass doors.

Karen entered wearing a perfectly pressed white blazer.

She carried a thick binder.

She wanted everyone to see that she was prepared.

Daniel sat at the front beside two board members and a lawyer.

Karen smiled.

This was her territory.

Or so she thought.

She found a seat near the front.

Then Maya walked in.

Karen's expression changed immediately.

Maya wasn't wearing a swimsuit this time.

She wore a simple black dress and carried a thin folder.

She sat quietly in the back.

Karen whispered to the woman beside her.

“Why is she here?”

The woman shrugged.

“She's a resident's guest.”

Karen frowned.

The meeting began.

Daniel stood.

“We're here because several residents have raised concerns about how community rules are being interpreted and enforced.”

Karen raised her hand immediately.

Daniel ignored her.

“We also need to clarify something important regarding the pool.”

He turned toward the lawyer.

The attorney stood.
