The meeting lasted nearly three hours.

By the end, the board voted unanimously to review its enforcement policies.

Karen lost her committee position.

But that wasn't the part that hurt most.

What hurt was walking through the lobby afterward and hearing people whisper.

Not about the pool.

About her.

She went home alone.

Her apartment felt unusually quiet.

She removed her blazer and placed it over a chair.

Then she looked at herself in the mirror.

For years, she had told herself she was protecting the community.

She had convinced herself that strictness was leadership.

That criticism was responsibility.

That controlling details meant preventing disorder.

But perhaps the truth was simpler.

She liked feeling important.

The realization made her uncomfortable.

The next morning, Karen returned to the pool.

It was quiet.

No meeting.

No crowd.

No audience.

Maya was sitting beside the water.

Karen almost turned around.

But Maya noticed her.

“Morning.”

Karen hesitated.

“Can I sit?”

Maya moved her towel.

“Sure.”

Karen sat several feet away.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Finally, Karen said:

“I owe you an apology.”

Maya looked at her.

“For yesterday?”

“For more than yesterday.”

Karen took a deep breath.

“I treated people badly.”

Maya remained silent.

Karen continued.

“I thought if I knew the rules better than everyone else, I had the right to enforce them.”

“You didn't.”

“I know.”

She looked at the water.

“When I fell into the pool yesterday, everyone laughed.”

Maya smiled slightly.

“I remember.”

Karen actually laughed.

It was the first time Maya had seen her laugh without bitterness.

“I deserved it.”

“You probably did.”

Karen smiled.

Then her expression became serious.

“But when you told me I had tested myself…”

She paused.

“That stayed with me.”

Maya nodded.

“Sometimes the truth is uncomfortable.”

Karen looked toward the apartment buildings.

“I don't know how to fix everything.”

“You don't have to fix everything.”

“Then what do I do?”

“Start with one thing.”

“What?”

“Stop assuming you know who belongs.”

Karen thought about it.

Then nodded.

Over the following weeks, something unexpected happened.

Karen began volunteering again.

But differently.

She helped organize pool schedules without deciding who deserved access.

She listened to residents.

She apologized to people she had previously ignored.

She even helped Daniel rewrite several confusing community notices.

At first, nobody trusted her.

That was fair.

Trust wasn't something she could demand.

She had to earn it.

Maya watched quietly.

One afternoon, Maya found Karen helping an elderly resident carry groceries from the parking lot.

The woman smiled.

“Thank you.”

Karen smiled back.

“No problem.”

Maya approached.

“You're changing.”

Karen laughed.

“Slowly.”

“That counts.”

Karen looked at her.

“You know what the strangest part is?”

“What?”

“I spent years trying to make people respect me.”

“And?”

Karen smiled.

“I finally realized respect isn't something you can order.”

Maya nodded.

“No.”

“You have to give people a reason.”

They stood quietly beside the pool.

Then Karen glanced at Maya.

“So, technically, you own this place?”

Maya laughed.

“The trust does.”

“And you could change everything?”

“Technically.”

Karen looked horrified.

“Please don't give me that much responsibility.”

Maya laughed.

For the first time, the two women laughed together.

But neither of them noticed the man standing near the entrance.

He had been listening.

He was wearing a dark suit.

And he was holding a folder marked:

PROPERTY TRANSFER — CONFIDENTIAL

Chapter 5

The man introduced himself the next morning.

His name was Jonathan Bennett.

Maya's older brother.

He arrived at the community office carrying several legal documents.

Maya looked surprised.

“What are you doing here?”

Jonathan smiled.
