Blake's jaw dropped, his arrogant confidence completely evaporating. He realized he had just committed a fatal mistake. This maintenance worker was not an ordinary man, but a life-crushing machine.

Damon stepped forward, his cold eyes devoid of any emotion. He didn't attack relentlessly, but advanced calmly, creating a terrifying psychological pressure that forced the two remaining henchmen to drop their weapons and turn to flee.

In less than twenty seconds, the ambush was completely shattered. Now, in the dark alley, only Damon and the former kickboxing champion remained, the latter trembling and backing away, his face drained of every drop of blood.

Chapter 16 - profound humiliation

Blake backed away until his back hit the cold, soaked brick wall of the alley. The legs that once delivered championship kicks now trembled violently, unable to stand firm. He was completely paralyzed by fear.

Damon approached, his shadow stretching long under the dim streetlights, engulfing the cowering man. He didn't pick up a weapon, nor did he raise a hand to strike. He just stood there, looking down at Blake with the gaze of a grim reaper.

"I... I have money! I'll pay you whatever you want!" Blake stammered, his voice cracking with panic. He clutched his head, completely losing all the pride of a fighter, leaving only the most primal cowardice.

"I told you," Damon spoke, his pitch so low and cold that it froze the atmosphere. "Power without control is just a game for impulsive children. You are not a martial artist."

Damon slowly bent down, picking up the iron pipe left by the thugs. Blake squeezed his eyes shut, bracing for the fatal blow that would end his life. But no pain descended upon his body.

The dry sound of clashing metal rang out. Damon had tossed the iron pipe aside. He stood up straight, his eyes holding ultimate contempt for the cowardly man groveling at his feet in the damp darkness.

Chapter 17 - justice served

Just as Damon was about to step out of the dark alley, blinding flashing red and blue lights from two police cruisers suddenly illuminated the area. The wail of sirens shattered the terrifying silence of the late night.

Four heavily armed police officers quickly stepped out of their vehicles, securing the exit. But accompanying them was none other than old man Miller, the Marine veteran with his familiar cap on his head, looking incredibly stern.

"I followed this champion's crew from the moment they left the bar," Miller stepped forward, glancing at the thugs groaning on the ground. He nodded to the accompanying police chief, signaling them to move in.

The officers immediately restrained Blake and his accomplices. With clear assault weapons and the testimony of a reliable witness like Miller, the arrogant champion's career and life of freedom officially closed behind iron bars.

Damon stood quietly in a corner, watching everything be resolved by the law instead of violence. He turned to look at Miller, giving a slight nod in place of a sincere thank you. The old veteran had kept his promise to protect him.

"You can defeat anyone, Damon," Miller said as he approached, gently patting the broad shoulder of the former operative. "But you don't have to clean up the trash alone. America still has people who respect the law."

That night, Damon boarded the late bus to return home. For the first time in years, he felt an invisible burden had been lifted. He knew that his son would never be threatened by that bastard again.

Chapter 18 - an offer

A week after the incident in the deserted alley, Damon received an unexpected phone call from Miller. The veteran invited him to visit a private business located in a quiet area, far from the noisy city center.

When Damon pushed the wooden door open and stepped inside, he was incredibly surprised. It wasn't a modern gym glaring with neon lights like the place Blake used to teach, but a traditional dojo, rustic and steeped in reverence.

The gray training mats were kept impeccably clean; hanging on the walls were calligraphy scrolls and worn martial arts belts. Miller was waiting for him in the middle of the room, smiling kindly, exuding the aura of a true master.

"This is my dojo," Miller spoke, spreading his arms wide. "I opened it twenty years ago to help troubled youth who had lost their way. But I am old now; I need a successor with enough talent and bravery."

Damon froze, his eyes filled with confusion. He never thought he would return to martial arts in any form, let alone become a teacher. He was always afraid that his assassin instincts would rise again.

"I only know how to destroy enemies, sir," Damon replied hesitantly. "I am not a teacher. These hands have been stained with too much mud; I'm afraid I cannot impart good values to the kids."

Miller stepped closer, placing a hand on Damon's shoulder. "The restraint you showed that day proves you understand the value of a life better than anyone else. That is the greatest lesson the children here need to learn, Damon."

Chapter 19 - starting over

Standing in the middle of the quiet dojo, Miller's words echoed deep within Damon's mind. He thought of Evan, of his son's hopeful eyes when he blurted out questions about strength and bravery on that rainy night.

Damon understood that hiding in the guise of a maintenance worker could not help his son become stronger. The boy needed a true guide, someone to teach him how to face fear without losing himself.
