THE DRAINED POOL AT LOT SEVENTEEN
Chapter I: The Empty Basin and the Accusation
The afternoon heat at Oak Creek Estates was heavy, but the tension in the backyard patio of Lot 17 was freezing cold. In the center of the paved courtyard sat a large, sunken inground swimming pool—bone-dry, with its blue fiberglass floor exposed to the sun and water completely drained.
Standing on the patio in a coral-red blouse, white pants, and sunglasses pushed back on her blonde hair was Sandra, the neighborhood’s most notorious HOA busybody. Her face was flushed with frantic, self-righteous rage as she gestured wildly toward the empty pool, flanked by two armed local patrol officers who had been summoned via a 911 dispatch.
"She drained my pool without permission!" Sandra shrieked, pointing an accusatory finger across the outdoor patio table. "I want this fixed right now! I want her cited for destruction of residential amenities!"
Standing calmly behind the wooden outdoor table in a light-blue button-down shirt and navy slacks was Claire. Arranged neatly across the tabletop were property blueprints, certified boundary markers, a laptop displaying high-resolution drone footage, and a thick white three-ring documentation binder.
