“Sir, she… she had an attitude, she was speeding, she crossed the double yellow line—”

“Shut your mouth, Cleary!” General Reed roared through the speaker so loudly that Deputy Toby Miller could hear every word from ten feet away. “I don’t give a damn about your county lines or your speed traps! You have illegally detained a member of the General Staff, you have confiscated class-top-secret military hardware, and you have compromised a federal defense corridor! Listen to me very carefully: if Brigadier General Hayes is not released from those handcuffs, handed back her equipment, and treated with full diplomatic immunity within thirty seconds, I will have the United States Department of Justice, the FBI, and the United States Army Armored Division strip your badge, seize your department, and incarcerate you in a federal penitentiary for the rest of your natural life! Do you understand me?!”

“Yes… yes sir!”

Boyd gasped, his face turning a sickly, ghostly shade of white.

“I understand, sir!”

“She is in command of your building now,” General Reed added coldly. “May God have mercy on you, because the Pentagon will not.”The line went dead with a loud click.

Boyd stood frozen, holding the red receiver in his shaking hand.

His face was drenched in sweat.

The swagger, the arrogance, the cocky small-town bully attitude that had defined his life for decades vanished instantly, peeled away to reveal a terrified, cowardly man staring into the abyss of absolute authority.

Before Boyd could even open his mouth to speak, the floor beneath their feet began to vibrate.

A low, deep, rhythmic thrumming sound resonated through the air, vibrating the glass panes in the front windows.

The dust on the desk began to dance.

The hanging fluorescent lights swung gently back and forth.

“Sheriff…”

Toby Miller whimpered, running to the front window and looking up into the sky.

“Sheriff, you need to see this…”

Boyd stumbled toward the window.

Descending directly through the towering clouds of red dust above the town square were two massive, pitch-black MH-60 Black Hawk military helicopters.

Their powerful rotor blades whipped the air into a frenzy, blowing down pine branches, scattering trash, and sending shockwaves through the quiet streets of Oak Haven.

The helicopters hovered just ten feet above the asphalt of the municipal parking lot before touching down with heavy precision.

Before the rotors even began to slow, the side doors slid open.

A squad of heavily armed United States Army Military Police officers—clad in tactical gear, body armor, and carrying automated rifles—poured out of the aircraft in a flawless, lethal perimeter formation.

Leading them was a full Colonel wearing a dark green dress uniform and a sidearm.

The heavy glass front doors of the Oak Haven Sheriff’s Department were kicked open with a thunderous CRACK.Tactical boots clattered across the linoleum floor as armed soldiers swept into the building, securing every corner, every doorway, and every hallway within five seconds flat.“Clear!”“Building secure!”

The Colonel strode purposefully into the booking room.

He scanned the room, spotted Sarah standing calmly against the wall, and instantly snapped his right hand up to his brow in a razor-sharp, flawless military salute.

“General Hayes, ma’am!”

Colonel Vance announced loudly.

“Colonel Vance, 101st Airborne Detachment.

We were in the sector conducting joint exercises when we received the NMCC Priority Flash.

We are here to secure your person and your equipment, ma’am!”

Sarah Hayes stepped forward smoothly.

She returned the salute with perfect form.

“Thank you, Colonel Vance,” Sarah said crisply.

“The situation is under control.”

She walked calmly past the trembling military police officers and stopped directly in front of Sheriff Boyd Cleary.

Boyd looked as though he were about to pass out.

His hands were shaking violently at his sides, his chest heaving as he gasped for air, his face completely drained of color.

“Sheriff Cleary,” Sarah said, her voice smooth, low, and entirely devoid of malice—which only made it ten times more terrifying.

“I believe you have some property belonging to the United States Government in that plastic tray.”
