Boyd practically tripped over his own feet as he scrambled backward toward the counter.
With trembling, sweating fingers, he picked up the matte-black secure communications device and held it out to her like a man offering a piece of gold to a monarch.
“Here… here it is, General… ma’am…”
Boyd whimpered, his voice cracking.
“It was… it was all a big misunderstanding!
A mistake!
I didn’t know who you were!
If I had known—”
“That is precisely the problem, Sheriff,” Sarah interrupted him, taking the device from his hands and running her thumb over the biometric scanner.
The device hummed to life instantly, its screen displaying a secure green verification code.
She looked Boyd straight in the eyes, her dark gaze penetrating straight into his soul.“You think authority gives you the right to abuse people who cannot fight back,” Sarah said quietly.
“You think a badge permits you to turn a public highway into a personal kingdom of fear and extortion.
Today, you picked a fight with someone who has the resources to fight back.
But I am thinking about all the citizens who drove through this town before me who didn’t have a four-star general on speed dial.”
Sarah turned her head toward Colonel Vance.“Colonel,” Sarah commanded.“Ma’am!”“Contact the Regional Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Attorney for this District, and the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division.
Tell them I am formally requesting a full federal investigation into the Oak Haven Sheriff’s Department for systemic civil rights violations, illegal asset forfeiture, falsification of official law enforcement records, and federal obstruction.”
“Understood, General!”
Colonel Vance replied instantly.
“I’ll have federal marshals here within the hour to secure all records, dashcams, and evidence drawers!”
Deputy Toby Miller fell to his knees behind the booking desk, his hands raised in immediate surrender.
“I’ll talk!
I’ll tell them everything!
He forced me to sign those fake traffic tickets!
He’s been taking cash out of people’s wallets for years!”
“Shut up, Toby!”
Boyd shrieked, his voice cracking into a desperate panic.
“Take his sidearm, Colonel,” Sarah instructed calmly.
“Sheriff Cleary is to remain right here in his own booking room until the federal agents arrive to place him under federal arrest.”
Two muscular Military Police officers stepped forward.
Within seconds, Boyd Cleary’s service weapon was stripped from his belt, and his wrists were roughly jerked behind his back.
CLICK-CLACK.The cold steel of standard-issue military handcuffs snapped shut around Boyd’s wrists—the exact same sound he had forced Sarah to hear on the side of Highway 89 just thirty minutes prior.Boyd looked down at his cuffed wrists, a sob catching in his throat as the reality of his total destruction crushed him.
His career was over.
His kingdom was gone.
His freedom was about to vanish into a federal penitentiary.
Sarah Hayes picked up her handbag, adjusted her suit jacket, and walked toward the open glass doors of the station.
The afternoon heat was still sweltering outside, but as she stepped onto the tarmac toward the waiting Black Hawk helicopter, a cool breeze swept across the square, clearing away the dust.
She paused at the door, turned her head slightly, and looked back at the sobbing, broken sheriff standing pinned against his own counter.“Have a good afternoon, Sheriff Cleary,” General Sarah Hayes said softly.
“I hope you enjoy the attitude package.”
