Emma noticed.

“Have you watched it?”

“No.”

“Watch.”

He turned toward the screen.

The audio was now on.

His own voice filled the room.

Step away from the gate.

Tyler’s face tightened.

You’re making passengers uncomfortable.

He closed his eyes briefly.

Emma paused the recording.

“What do you hear?”

He looked at her.

“Myself.”

“No. Listen again.”

She pressed play.

Tyler listened.

When the recording ended, he stared at the floor.

“I sound…”

He stopped.

“Go on.”

“I sound like I didn’t care.”

Emma nodded.

“Did you?”

Tyler looked up quickly.

“Yes.”

“Did you care about me?”

He had no answer.

That was answer enough.

Emma sat across from him.

“Why?”

Tyler took a long breath.

“Because I was worried about the line. About the delay. About getting blamed if the flight left late.”

“So you were protecting yourself.”

He looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

Emma was silent for a moment.

Then she said, “That’s more honest than your first apology.”

Tyler looked surprised.

“You’re not going to fire me?”

“I haven’t decided.”

He nodded.

“But I know this much,” Emma continued. “If I fire you and change nothing else, someone else will eventually stand at another gate and make the same mistake.”

She stood.

“So tomorrow, you’re coming with me.”

“Where?”

“To training.”

Tyler looked confused.

“Training?”

“Yes.”

“I thought I was already trained.”

Emma picked up her folder.

“That,” she said, “is what we’re going to find out.”

The next morning, Emma Caldwell would sit in a room filled with gate agents, supervisors, and airport managers.

None of them would know exactly what she planned to say.

But one thing was certain.

After what had happened at Gate 27, Horizon Air Group would no longer be able to pretend that a simple boarding error was just a simple boarding error.

Because sometimes the smallest moment of disrespect revealed the largest problem hiding inside a company.

And Emma intended to find every one of them.

The next morning, Tyler Brooks arrived at Horizon Air Group’s regional training center fifteen minutes early.

He had barely slept.

Every time he closed his eyes, he heard his own voice from the security footage.

Step away from the gate.

You’re making passengers uncomfortable.

He had said those words without shouting. That was almost worse. There had been no dramatic argument, no loss of control that he could blame on anger.

He had simply decided that the passenger in front of him was a problem.

And then he had treated her like one.

Tyler entered the training room expecting to find a disciplinary hearing.

Instead, he found twenty-three chairs arranged in a circle.

Several gate agents were already seated. Two supervisors stood near the coffee table. Rebecca Morales was reviewing a stack of documents, while three members of the technology department adjusted a presentation screen at the front of the room.

Tyler stopped.

“Am I in the right place?”

Rebecca looked up.

“You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.”

He took a seat near the back.

A few minutes later, Emma Caldwell entered.

Nobody spoke.

She was dressed differently from the day before. Her dark blue coat had been replaced by a simple gray suit, but she still carried no visible signs of the executive authority that followed her everywhere.

No assistants.

No security.

No dramatic entrance.

She simply walked into the room and pulled a chair into the circle.

“Good morning,” she said.

Several people answered quietly.

Emma looked around.

“I’m sure some of you are wondering why you’re here.”

Nobody volunteered an answer.

“So I’ll tell you.”

She placed a small pile of boarding passes in the center of the circle.

“Each of these belonged to a passenger who experienced some version of the same system error.”

Tyler stared at them.

“The people involved had different names, different destinations, different reasons for traveling,” Emma continued. “But they all had something in common.”

She looked toward the screen.

A video appeared.

An elderly man stood at a gate, holding a cane.

Then the video changed.

A young mother struggled with a child and a diaper bag.

Another image appeared.

A college student argued with an employee.

Emma paused the screen.

“What do you see?”

One of the agents spoke.
