“My father built this place,” he said.
“But building something doesn't make everything you do inside it right.”
He announced that the academy would undergo an independent review.
Some students left.
Others stayed.
Emma watched quietly.
For the first time, Daniel wasn't protecting the reputation of the school.
He was protecting the people inside it.
CHAPTER 5 — THE TRUTH ABOUT MICHAEL
The investigation uncovered one final document.
It was a letter Michael had written shortly before his death.
Sarah had never opened it.
She had been too afraid.
Emma read it first.
Her father's message was simple.
He did not want revenge.
He wanted the academy to become safer.
He wrote that martial arts had given him discipline, confidence, and purpose.
But he had also learned that a belt could never make a dishonest person honorable.
Daniel read the letter afterward.
He cried.
Not loudly.
Just enough for Emma to understand how much regret he had carried.
“I should have apologized to him,” Daniel said.
Emma looked at him.
“Why didn't you?”
“Pride.”
She nodded.
“That seems to be what ruined a lot of things.”
Daniel accepted the words.
Then he did something nobody expected.
He placed Michael's photograph back on the wall.
Not beside the founders.
Not in a hidden corner.
In the center of the main hallway.
Beneath it, he placed a small plaque:
HE CHOSE TO SPEAK WHEN SILENCE WAS EASIER.
Emma stared at it.
Her father was finally being remembered for what he had actually done.
Not as a troublemaker.
Not as someone who abandoned the academy.
As the person who had tried to protect it from itself.
