Below it was another name.
Sarah Carter.
Emma looked up.
“You competed?”
Sarah smiled.
“A long time ago.”
“How good were you?”
“Good enough.”
Daniel, standing nearby, laughed.
“That means she was terrifying.”
Sarah shook her head.
“I stopped after you were born.”
Emma looked between them.
“Why didn't you ever tell me?”
Sarah's voice softened.
“Because I wanted you to choose who you were without carrying our history.”
Emma held the paper.
“I think I understand now.”
She realized something important.
Her mother hadn't been hiding the past because she was ashamed.
She had been protecting her daughter from it.
But Emma no longer needed protection from the truth.
She needed the freedom to decide what to do with it.
She looked at Daniel.
“You know what Dad would say?”
“What?”
“He'd say the mat doesn't belong to any one person.”
Daniel smiled.
“He'd be right.”
Emma stepped onto the mat.
Sarah followed.
For the first time, mother and daughter stood together in the place where Sarah had once been told she didn't belong.
CHAPTER 8 — THE GIRL WHO STEPPED ONTO THE MAT
A year after that first confrontation, the academy held a small ceremony.
Students, parents, former instructors, and members of the community filled the room.
Daniel stood beside the photograph of Michael.
He addressed the crowd.
“We used to believe a great academy was defined by its champions.”
He paused.
“We were wrong.”
He looked toward Emma.
“It is defined by how it treats the people who are still learning.”
The room applauded.
