"Well, well," Kaelen rumbled, clicking the flashlight on and shining it directly into my eyes. "The little waitress from the diner. I was wondering when you'd come poking around.""I don't know what you're talking about," I wheezed, trying to scramble backward."Save it, Kessler. We've known who you were since you moved here. Deveraux keeps tabs on the loose ends that don't die in the crashes we arrange." Kaelen stepped forward, raising the heavy flashlight. "You should have stayed out of it. Now, we're going to put you in the compartment with the chemicals. You can ride all the way to Canada in the dark."He swung the flashlight down.I rolled hard to the left. The heavy metal casing smashed into the linoleum where my head had just been, cracking the tile. I kicked out with both feet, catching Kaelen squarely in the kneecap. He roared in pain, stumbling backward.I scrambled to my feet and bolted for the door, bursting out into the cold night air of the yard."Hey!" Kaelen bellowed, his voice echoing across the asphalt. "Lock the gates! We've got a rat!"Chapter Five: The Dead Man's GearSirens began to wail across the yard—a harsh, mechanical klaxon that shattered the night. Floodlights snapped on, bathing the rows of trucks in blinding white light.I sprinted toward the trucks, dodging between the massive tires. "Emmett!" I screamed.A figure darted out from beneath Trailer 4092. Emmett was clutching a heavy plastic bundle wrapped in duct tape, his face pale and sweating. "I got it!" he yelled over the sirens. "But we've got company!"Two men were running from the loading dock, pulling sidearms from their jackets."The fence is too far!" I yelled, calculating the distance to our entry point. We'd be gunned down before we made it halfway.I looked at the black Peterbilt hitched to Trailer 4092. The engine block was warm; the driver had been prepping it for the morning run."Get in!" I shoved Emmett toward the cab."Are you crazy?" he shouted, even as he scrambled up the chrome steps.
