I swung up into the driver's seat, slamming the heavy door behind me. The keys were dangling in the ignition—a cardinal sin in the trucking world, but a godsend for me. I twisted the key. The massive diesel engine roared to life, a vibrating beast of pure power waking beneath me."Hang on!" I shouted.I stomped the clutch, threw the heavy gearshift into first, and slammed my foot on the accelerator. The eighteen-wheeler lurched forward, the torque pinning Emmett back against the passenger seat.Gunfire cracked over the roar of the engine. A bullet shattered the passenger-side mirror, sending glass raining into the cab. Emmett ducked, clutching the bundle of chemicals to his chest.I grabbed the CB radio mic from the dash. "This is Dawn Kessler to any Highway Patrol on this frequency. I am driving a stolen Deveraux rig, number 4092, northbound on Route Nine. I have federal evidence of narcotics trafficking and attempted murder. If you want the bust of a lifetime, track my GPS."I tossed the mic aside, double-clutching and shifting into third gear as we barreled toward the main gate. The security guard, Miller, was standing in front of the closed steel gates, his pistol drawn. When he saw forty tons of steel bearing down on him at forty miles an hour, his courage evaporated. He dove into the ditch."Brace yourself!" I yelled. The Peterbilt slammed through the chain-link gates like a battering ram. Metal shrieked, sparks showered across the windshield, and the heavy rig burst out onto the open expanse of Route Nine, the trailer swaying wildly behind us before snapping into line."We're out!" Emmett yelled, a manic laugh escaping his throat.I checked the rearview mirror. Two pairs of headlights had just pulled out of the yard, accelerating fast. Black SUVs."Not yet," I said, my hands gripping the massive steering wheel. "We're heavy, and they're fast. And the only way to the federal courthouse in Elko..."I looked at the GPS glowing on the dash, the green line routing us toward the mountain pass."...is over Widow's Grade."Author's Note: The story can be expanded further into the climactic chase down Widow's Grade and the subsequent resolution if you would like to continue.
