The Haven in the Hailstorm

The storm didn’t creep over the horizon; it attacked. Within minutes, the humid summer sky over rural Texas bruised into a violent shade of greenish-black. The wind howled with freight-train intensity, tearing leaves from the oak trees and sending dust swirling across the asphalt. Then came the hail—first small pebble-sized stones, quickly escalating into golf-ball-sized chunks of ice that slammed down with explosive force, shattering roof tiles and fracturing car windshields across the quiet suburban neighborhood.

Sixteen-year-old Toby stood just inside the open threshold of his family’s two-car garage, staring out into the tempest. His parents were stuck in town, delayed by the weather, leaving him alone to batten down the hatches. He had already pulled their lawnmower and toolboxes against the back wall to keep them dry, but as he watched the frozen artillery pummel the driveway, a sound deeper than the rolling thunder began to vibrate through the concrete floor.

It was the unmistakable, low-frequency roar of heavy V-twin engines.

Toby stepped forward, squinting through the torrential grey sheets of rain. Emerging from the end of the cul-de-sac was a convoy of motorcycles—eight Harley-Davidsons riding in tight formation, their headlights cutting bright yellow beams through the mist. The riders were clad in soaked leather cuts bearing the embroidered skull insignia of the Iron Vandal Raiders. They were big, intimidating men with weathered faces, fighting desperately to keep their heavy chrome machines upright against the slick road and punishing hailstones. Every direct strike of ice chipped at custom paint jobs, dented gas tanks, and bruised the riders' bare arms. They were completely exposed, trapped in the center of an open suburban street with nowhere to hide.
