A collective, startled tension rippled through the space. Seated a few rows back, an elderly aristocratic woman in a vintage pearl necklace and cream coat gasped softly, clutching her hands in shock. But Nyra did not flinch. She did not shrink back or cower in fear. Instead, she slowly raised her chin, her dark, piercing eyes locking onto the captain’s furious gaze with an intensity that made the surrounding air feel instantly heavy.
"You should verify my name," Nyra replied, her voice dropping to a low, velvet-smooth register that cut through the roar of the jet engines with razor-sharp precision.
Her calm demeanor instead of submission only poured gasoline onto Miller’s raging ego. Enraged that a passenger—and a Black woman at that—dared to talk back to him, his face flushed a deep, ugly crimson. He slammed his hand onto the armrest, leaning in even closer until their faces were inches apart, spouting venomous fury.
"Shut your mouth up!" Miller screamed, the ugly mask of corporate and personal bigotry fully slipping off his face. "I don't care who you think you are! Move your bag and get to the back of the aircraft right now, or I'll have you physically thrown off this jet!"
