"She knew you had it," Julian said grimly. "And now, they know you are here. We have very little time."

Chapter 5: Shadows on the Perimeter

The quiet rhythm of the valley was shattered on a moonless Tuesday night. Clara woke to the faint crunch of gravel outside the cottage window. The wind howled through the pine branches, but this sound was distinct—a steady, deliberate footstep approaching the wooden porch.

Clara sat up in bed, her heart hammering against her ribs. She threw off the heavy quilt and tiptoed across the braided rug to the window. Peering through the lace curtain, she saw two dark figures moving stealthily along the side of the house, their flashlights casting narrow, probing beams across the white clapboard walls.

"Mrs. Higgins," Clara whispered, rushing down the narrow hallway to the housekeeper’s room.

The older woman was already awake, sitting on the edge of her bed with a heavy iron poker in her hand. Her face was pale, but her jaw was set with stubborn resolve.

"I heard them," Mrs. Higgins whispered back. "They aren’t local poachers. Lock the back pantry door and stay in the root cellar. There is a heavy oak latch inside."

"I'm not leaving you to face them alone," Clara protested, feeling the familiar, protective weight of her unborn child.

"Listen to me, Clara! They aren't here for me; they are hunting for the ledger receipts you remember. If they take you, Julian loses everything, and your child has no future. Go, now!"

Before Clara could argue further, the front glass shattered with a sharp, explosive crash. Heavy boots trampled across the living room floor, and rough voices demanded to know where the girl was hiding. Panic surged, but survival instinct took over. Clara slipped into the damp, subterranean darkness of the root cellar, pulling the heavy oak door shut behind her just as footsteps pounded down the hallway toward the kitchen.

Crouching behind stacks of pickled jars and burlap sacks of potatoes, Clara clamped a hand over her mouth to muffle her breathing. Through the narrow ventilation slit near the floorboards, she saw the beam of a flashlight sweep across the cellar stairs. A gloved hand gripped the iron latch, rattling it violently.

"This one's locked," a gruff voice muttered from above.

"Check the perimeter! Julian’s private car just turned onto the access road. We’ve been made!" the second voice barked.

The heavy boots retreated, running back toward the shattered front window. Clara exhaled a shaky breath, tears of relief and terror blurring her vision. Upstairs, Mrs. Higgins was shouting defiance, her voice echoing through the timber frame. Then, the distinct roar of a high-performance engine pierced the night, followed by the screech of tires on gravel as Julian Sterling arrived to reclaim his domain.

Chapter 6: The Return to the Lion’s Den

The headlights of Julian’s black sedan cut through the dense fog as he killed the engine outside the ravaged cottage. He bounded up the broken steps, his face dark with fury, kicking open the splintered front door with a resounding crash.

"Mrs. Higgins! Clara!" Julian shouted, his hand resting instinctively on a snub-nosed revolver tucked into his belt.

Mrs. Higgins emerged from the kitchen, her hair slightly disheveled but unharmed, gripping the iron poker like a seasoned veteran. "In the root cellar, Julian. They broke the window, looking for the girl. They were Vanguard men, I’d stake my life on it."

Julian didn't hesitate. He strode across the floor and threw open the root cellar door, peering down into the darkness. "Clara? It’s safe. You can come out."

Clara emerged slowly, clutching her swollen belly, her face pale in the harsh flashlight beam. Julian immediately stepped forward, offering his hand to guide her up the steep wooden steps. When she stood safely on solid ground, he pulled her into a brief, fierce embrace, his chest heaving with adrenaline.

"Are you hurt?" he asked, checking her over with intense scrutiny.
