The badge hits the pavement hard enough to bounce once.
Officer Tyler Walker looks down at it.
Silver against gray concrete.
For three years, he has worn that badge over his heart.
Now DEPUTY FRANK DOLAN has ripped it from his uniform and thrown it at his feet like a piece of trash.
Outside the Mercer County Courthouse, three senior deputies surround Tyler beside a line of patrol cars.Courts & Judiciary

Morris steps closer.
“That prisoner put a deputy in the hospital.”
“He was handcuffed when Dolan hit him.”
Dolan grabs Tyler by the front of his jacket.
“You chose a prisoner over your own brothers.”
A deep voice comes from behind them.
“No.”

“He chose the oath.”
Dolan releases Tyler.
Nobody says anything.
Sheriff Walker looks from one deputy to the next.
Then he points above them.
“And you just assaulted an officer in front of six courthouse cameras.”
The three deputies look up.
Small black security cameras stare down from the courthouse walls.

His father steps closer.
“Give me your weapons and your badges.”
Dolan laughs once.
“You serious?”
“Completely.”
“We were talking.”
“You put your hands on one of my officers.”
“Your son.”Law Enforcement
“My officer.”
Dolan’s expression changes.
“That distinction getting easier for you, Sheriff?”
Walker holds out his hand.
“Gun.”
For a long moment, Dolan doesn’t move.
Then he unclips his holster and hands it over.
Bishop follows.
Morris hesitates.
Walker looks at him.
“Don’t make me ask twice.”
Morris surrenders his weapon.
Then the badges.
Three pieces of metal drop into Walker’s palm.
Dolan steps close enough that only the sheriff and Tyler hear him.
“This isn’t over.”
Sheriff Walker meets his eyes.
“Then make your next decision a better one.”
Dolan smiles coldly.
“Careful, Dan.”
He glances at Tyler.
“Boy keeps digging, he might find something neither one of you wants found.”
Then Dolan walks away.
Bishop and Morris follow him.

“What did he mean?”
His father doesn’t answer immediately.
“Dad.”
Walker looks toward the courthouse cameras.
“Get inside.”
Two hours earlier, Tyler had testified before a grand jury.
The incident seemed simple.
Three months before, a suspected methamphetamine distributor named EDDIE VANCE had been arrested after a traffic stop.
Vance ran.Cameras
Deputies chased him through a drainage ditch.
Dolan caught him.
By the time Tyler reached them, Vance was already handcuffed and facedown in the mud.
Then Dolan kicked him.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
Tyler shouted for him to stop.
Dolan didn’t.
So Tyler pulled him away.
Vance suffered three broken ribs, a fractured orbital bone, and internal bleeding.
Dolan’s report said Vance had resisted after being handcuffed.
Tyler’s body camera showed otherwise.
The department expected Tyler to stay quiet.
Instead, he turned over the footage.
