Dolan motions with the gun.
“Drop it.”
Tyler lets the photograph fall.
Mara raises her hands.
Dolan walks closer.
“Your father always had terrible timing.”
Tyler looks at him.
“What is that picture?”
“You should ask him.”
“I’m asking you.”
Dolan smiles.
“Daniel Walker wasn’t investigating Pike.”
Tyler’s jaw tightens.
“He was working with him.”
“Bullshit.”
“That what Daddy told you?”
Mara cuts in.
“Frank, if you’re going to kill us, stop performing and do it. Otherwise start telling the truth.”
Dolan looks at her.
“I always liked you, Velez.”
“No, you didn’t.”
“Fair.”
He gestures toward the cash box.
“My father, Walker, Pike. They were all in business together.”
Tyler shakes his head.
“No.”
“Your father took money.”
“No.”
“He gave Pike information about raids.”
“You’re lying.”
“Ask him why Pike’s people knew which houses were getting searched.”
Tyler takes one step toward Dolan.
The pistol rises.
“Easy.”
Tyler stops.
Dolan continues.
“Then your father grew a conscience.”
Mara watches carefully.
“When?”
“After his wife got sick.”
Dolan’s expression changes slightly.
“He decided he wanted out. Started collecting evidence. Harold found out.”
Tyler looks at the photograph again.
“So the picture doesn’t prove he was dirty.”
“No. It proves he was in the room.”
Dolan smiles.
“Sometimes that’s enough.”
Tyler realizes something.
“You don’t actually know what happened.”
Dolan’s smile fades.
“Know enough.”
“No. Your father told you his version.”
“Shut up.”
“He told you Walker betrayed him.”
Dolan steps closer.
“Shut your mouth.”
Tyler sees the wound now.
This isn’t only about corruption.
It’s inheritance.
Dolan has spent his whole life protecting the memory of his father.
Tyler has spent his protecting his.
Two sons standing inside a basement filled with the mistakes of men they worshiped.
Mara says quietly:
“Frank. Who killed Eddie Vance?”
Dolan looks at her.
Nobody moves.
Finally:
“Bishop.”
Tyler looks at Bishop.
The deputy stiffens.
Dolan continues.
“Eddie was talking too much.”
Bishop says, “Frank—”
“Doesn’t matter now.”
“It matters to me.”
Dolan turns slightly.
That is all Mara needs.
She drives her elbow into Bishop’s throat.
Tyler lunges.
Gunfire erupts.
A bullet punches into the ceiling.
Tyler slams Dolan into the lockers.
The pistol falls.
Bishop grabs Mara by the hair.
She drives her heel into his knee.
Tyler and Dolan crash into a concrete column.
Dolan is stronger.
Older.
Meaner.
He punches Tyler twice and drives him backward.
Tyler sees the pistol on the floor.
Dolan sees it too.
Both dive.
Tyler reaches it first.
He rolls onto his back.
Gun raised.
Dolan stops.
Tyler breathes hard.
“Don’t.”
Dolan smiles.
“You going to shoot one of your brothers?”
Tyler’s finger stays outside the trigger guard.
“No.”
He rises.
“I’m arresting one.”
Dolan’s smile disappears.
Mara has Bishop facedown.
She handcuffs him.
Tyler orders Dolan to turn around.
For several seconds, Dolan refuses.
Then slowly, he does.
Tyler cuffs him.
Dolan looks over his shoulder.
“You think this changes anything?”
“Yeah.”
“What?”
Tyler takes his badge from his pocket.
The same badge Dolan threw onto the pavement.
He clips it back onto his shirt.
“It means you don’t get to decide what this badge stands for.”
They barely make it upstairs before the building erupts.
An explosion tears through the evidence room.
Windows shatter.
The hallway fills with smoke.
Tyler is thrown against a wall.
Mara disappears beneath falling ceiling tiles.
The fire alarm screams.
Dolan laughs.
Tyler looks at him.
“What did you do?”
“I didn’t.”
Another explosion shakes the building.
