I approached him, resting my calloused, dirt-stained hands on the polished granite.

"Excuse me, son," I said, making my voice rough and weary.

Ethan blinked, taking in my appearance.

He didn't recoil, but a profound look of anxiety crossed his face.

"Sir, are you... are you a guest here?" Ethan asked, his voice low and rushed.

"No," I replied softly. "I'm just incredibly cold. I was hoping I might be able to sit by the heat vent in the vestibule for a few minutes. Maybe get a glass of tap water."

Ethan glanced over his shoulder again, swallowing hard.

I saw his hand instinctively reach beneath the counter, pulling up a disposable blue plastic water bottle.

He possessed the basic human decency I demanded of all my employees.

"Look, you really shouldn't be in here," Ethan whispered urgently, sliding the bottle across the stone. "The manager... she's very strict. If you just take this and go out through the side—"

"Ethan."

The voice sliced through the ambient warmth of the lobby like a razor blade.

I turned my head.

Walking out from the frosted glass doors was a woman in her mid-thirties.

She wore a sharply tailored charcoal suit that screamed expensive, her dark hair pulled back into a severe, flawless knot.

Her posture was rigid, exuding a terrifying, absolute authority.

This was Vanessa Sterling, the Director of Guest Relations, whom the board had recently appointed as the Acting General Manager.

I had read her file yesterday.

She was the primary candidate to take over the permanent GM position, heavily endorsed by our regional VP for her aggressive profit maximization.

Vanessa’s heels clicked loudly against the marble as she marched toward us, her eyes locked on me with unfiltered disgust.

She held a leather-bound folder in her hand.

Sticking out from the edge of the folder, I could clearly see a printed memo with bold red text at the top: Projected Overages - Elite Tier.

That phrase wasn't in our corporate vocabulary.

"What is this?" Vanessa demanded, not speaking to me, but addressing Ethan.

"Ms. Sterling," Ethan stammered, his hand immediately pulling back from the water bottle as if it were on fire. "He just came in to get out of the snow. I was just giving him some water before he left."

Vanessa didn't yell.

She didn't have to.

Her voice dropped to a terrifyingly quiet, venomous register.

"We are running a five-star luxury establishment, Ethan. We are not a soup kitchen. We are not a city shelter."

She reached forward and casually swept the plastic water bottle off the counter.

It hit the marble floor with a loud crack, water bursting out and spilling across my dirty boots.

Ethan flinched, looking completely humiliated.

"You will clean that up," Vanessa told him without looking at him.

Then, she finally turned her eyes on me.

She looked me up and down, taking in the frayed beanie, the stained jacket, and the worn denim.

Her upper lip curled in a micro-expression of pure revulsion.

"I don't know how you slipped past my doorman," Vanessa said, her tone dripping with absolute contempt. "But you need to turn around and walk back out into the gutter where you belong."

I didn't break eye contact.

I didn't raise my voice.

"The wind out there is dangerous," I said calmly. "I was told this hotel had a policy. The Community Access mandate. A plaque used to be right there on that wall."

Vanessa let out a sharp, mocking laugh.

"That pathetic little charity program was terminated," she sneered. "The previous management was weak, letting the streets bleed into our lobby. I represent a new era of ownership mandate. We are protecting the exclusivity of our clientele."

A new ownership mandate.

That was a lie.

I was the owner, and I had mandated no such thing.
