"I said... open it," Arthur growled, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy tone. He shoved Eleanor's hands away without turning his head.
The cemetery workers hesitated, glancing nervously at one another before stepping forward with heavy crowbars. The screech of metal tearing against polished cedar sounded like a death cry in the damp afternoon air. The mourners pressed forward in a tight circle, holding their breath as the lid was slowly levered open.
Inside the silk-lined casket, little Lily lay motionless. She wore her favorite ivory lace dress, her pale hands neatly crossed over her chest. Her skin was marble-white, her lips devoid of color.
Arthur dropped to his knees directly into the thick brown mud, his expensive trousers soaking up the icy water. Trembling, he reached out two fingers and pressed them firmly against the side of his daughter's neck.
Cold. Utterly still. No pulse.
"You see?!" Eleanor wailed, covering her face as she stepped toward the casket. "He's just a disturbed boy causing mayhem! Guards, get him out of my sight before I call the police!"
"Check under her tongue!" the boy shouted from where he was restrained, his chest heaving violently. "The chemical compound is called 'Phantasm'! It causes a severe metabolic drop that mimics clinical death, but it leaves an indigo chemical burn beneath the frenulum! Check her before the oxygen inside the sealed lining is depleted!"
Arthur froze. The specificity of the boy's words was too detailed, too chilling to be a mere hoax. Suspicion overcame his despair. Overriding Eleanor's sharp gasp, Arthur gently pried open his daughter's small, cold jaw.
Deep under Lily's tongue, a vivid, glowing indigo stain coated the mucosal lining—an unmistakable chemical residue.
At that exact instant, Arthur felt a microscopic puff of air touch his fingertips. A minuscule, barely audible gasp rattled in Lily's chest. Her eyelids gave a faint, almost invisible flutter.
Arthur's eyes dilated in utter shock. A surge of electric adrenaline rushed through his veins. "SHE'S BREATHING!" he roared, his voice shaking the trees around them. "MEDIC! CALL AN AMBULANCE! MY DAUGHTER IS ALIVE!"
Chaos exploded across the hillside. Mourners shrieked, cell phones were ripped out, and doctors among the guests rushed forward with emergency kits. Arthur lifted Lily's limp body out of the coffin, wrapping her tightly in his coat, pressing her small head against his chest to share his own body warmth.
When Arthur turned around to face his wife, the heartbroken expression on Eleanor's face had completely evaporated. In its place was an expression of pure, predatory malice and sheer panic.
Realizing the game was up, Eleanor did not offer a word of defense. She spun around, tossed her umbrella into the mud, and sprinted with terrifying speed toward a black luxury sedan idling at the cemetery's iron gates.
"Stop her! Don't let her leave!" Arthur bellowed to his personal bodyguards.
Two armed security officers sprinted down the cobblestone path, but the sedan's engine roared to life. Tires shrieked against wet asphalt, throwing up streams of water as the vehicle blasted through the gates and vanished into the thickening rain fog.
Chapter 3: The Shadow of the Will
Inside the high-security ICU ward of St. Jude Central Hospital, the rhythmic, electronic beep of a heart monitor provided a comforting rhythm against the sterile silence. Lily was hooked to intravenous detox drips, oxygen lines, and thermal blankets. Color was slowly returning to her cheeks, and her vital signs were stabilizing by the minute.
In the hallway outside, Arthur stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass panel, staring intently at his sleeping daughter. Beside him sat the boy from the cemetery, clean, dressed in dry medical scrubs, sipping a steaming mug of hot chocolate.
"Tell me everything," Arthur said softly, kneeling down so he was at eye level with the young boy. "Who are you, and how did you know about 'Phantasm'?"
The boy took a small sip from his cup, his hands still trembling slightly. "My name is Leo. My older brother, Daniel, is a senior chemical engineer at Vance Pharmaceuticals."
