"You're out," Jesse said, keeping his voice below a whisper. "Get your coat."

"Vance told you to go home," I said, stepping into the hallway.

"He went to the rail siding behind the wrecker yard," Jesse replied, setting the cardboard box on the booking counter. "The transport from Tennessee just crossed the county boundary at mile marker 3. Vance called the district magistrate from his cruiser phone five minutes ago to tell him you agreed to an oral stipulation and voluntary forfeiture."

"I signed nothing," I said. "I defaced his release form and documented the invalid docket."

"I know," Jesse said, turning the dispatch monitor toward him. His fingers moved across the keyboard with rapid, methodical efficiency. "He told Calloway the paperwork was soaked with diesel from a ruptured saddle tank during recovery. He filed a verbal emergency disposal order over the radio. If Calloway signs the electronic docket from his bedside terminal before midnight, Vance's salvage title becomes absolute under county code 14, and the state transit commission has no jurisdiction to intervene."

Jesse looked down at the thumb drive still plugged into the front port of the tower. He clicked the dismount key, pulled the drive from the slot, and checked the file directory.

"The dashcam loop is here," he said, handing the metal drive back to me. "Fourteen minutes of uncompressed audio and video from the moment his light bar tripped. It shows him cutting your rig off on the shoulder, pulling the iron pry bar from his cruiser trunk, and forcing the tailgate latches open himself while you were still in the cab reaching for your registration."

"Where is the advance docket sheet?" I asked. "The intake paper stamped seventy-two hours before the stop?"

Jesse reached into the cardboard box he had carried from the patrol office, pulling out a blue carbon folio bound with brass grommets. "Vance keeps the duplicate transfer books in the civil storage locker behind the magistrate's courtroom. I pulled the master ledger before I turned in my keys."

He flipped the folio open under the desk lamp. On the ledger’s sixth page, written in Vance’s distinctive backward-slanted script, was the entry for October 1: PRE-SEIZURE PETITION: COMMERCIAL CHASSIS REG 8-4-4-J. ESTIMATED SALVAGE VALUE: $48,000. DISPOSITION: DIRECT PRIVATE SALE TO VANCE LAND AND EQUIPMENT HOLDINGS UPON COUNTY IMPOUND.

The paper trail was complete. The advance filing proved premeditated theft under color of authority; the purple indelible transfer from my binder proved lawful ownership by the Miller cooperative; and the dashcam footage established the deliberate staging of structural damage on a public roadway.

"Jesse," I said, watching him fold his deputy’s commission card into the middle of the ledger. "If you hand this over to the state investigator, you won't work in this county again. Your family still has to live along this valley."

Jesse’s jaw hardened, the line of his mouth settling into the same rigid resolve his father had carried when the holding company stripped their timber rights. "My family already lost the ridge, Nora. If we let them steal the cooperative’s irrigation pumps tonight, every smallholder from here to the river will be forced into tenant leases before the ground thaws in March. We don't have a county left to live in if Harlan Vance runs the auctions from the back of a squad car."

He pulled a heavy ring of brass vehicle keys from the box and laid them on the desk blotter next to my driver’s license and transport log.

"Take cruiser twelve from the sally port," Jesse said. "The radio's tuned to the state police regional channel out of district four. Lieutenant Harris is the shift commander on duty in Marion tonight. He served two terms on the state freight commission before he went to the highway patrol. If you present this ledger and the drive at the district four barracks before the midnight docket certifies, the state attorney general's transit unit issues an immediate stay of execution on the local impound."

The building shuddered faintly as a low rumble echoed through the ventilation ducts from the direction of Route 9. Jesse stepped to the high, narrow window of the booking office, peering through the frosted wire glass into the valley below.
