"People notice kindness," the old man said, his voice dropping into a steady, resonant baritone that carried easily over the clatter of the kitchen.

He reached into his leather wallet once more. This time, he didn't pull out pennies or frayed dollar bills. From a hidden velvet slip in the back, his weathered fingers drew out a heavy, polished silver coin, struck with the detailed relief of a coastal lighthouse surrounded by seven stars.

The old man reached across the table and placed the cool, weighty medallion directly into Leo’s open palm.

"So do we," the man added quietly.

Raymond scoffed loudly. "What kind of junk token is that? You think a toy coin covers your insult to my restaurant?"

The old man didn't even look at Raymond. He picked up his wooden cane, pushed himself up with steady strength, and stepped around the table toward the glass front door. Leo stared down at the medallion, feeling its impossible heft—solid sterling silver, cool against his skin, engraved with the words: Integrity in the Shadows.

Stepping out onto the sidewalk under the diner’s awning, the old man reached into the deep interior pocket of his worn denim jacket and pulled out a sleek, encrypted black smartphone. He dialed a direct line, bringing the phone to his ear with fluid confidence.

Through the large glass window, Leo and Raymond watched in stunned silence as the beggar spoke into the receiver.
