"Your defensive technique is very sharp, kid," the man said, a warm, grandfatherly smile briefly breaking through his stoic demeanor. "But you lost that fight long before he ever wrapped his arm around your throat.""I was winning," Lyra whispered hoarsely."You were surviving," the old man corrected gently. "But the moment he grabbed you, you fought his massive muscle with your small muscle. When the choke finally sank in, absolute panic took over your mind. You cannot fight fire with fear, child. You will burn every time. You must fight fire with water.""Who are you?""The name is Vance," he said simply, turning away and beginning the long walk toward the gym's exit. He paused at the door. "And this gym... is a graveyard for potential. You will find nothing but ghosts here."As Vance pushed through the heavy metal doors, Lyra stood entirely still, looking around the room with newly opened eyes. She saw Kael whining loudly to the coach, aggressively playing the victim. She saw the other fighters awkwardly averting their eyes, complicit in the deeply rotting toxicity of the environment. The powerful, intoxicating illusion of the Iron Crucible was permanently broken.Without saying a single word to Miller, Lyra walked to the locker room, packed her canvas gym bag, walked out the heavy front doors, and vowed silently that she would never look back.Chapter 8: The Reluctant MasterIt took Lyra three exhausting days of asking questions around the city's amateur martial arts scene to finally track Vance down. She eventually found him miles away, in a dilapidated, desperately underfunded community center on the extreme outskirts of the city. He was quietly teaching basic, functional self-defense to a group of loud, energetic local teenagers on faded, mismatched puzzle mats.Lyra waited patiently by the door. When the class finally ended, she approached him."Teach me how you did that."Vance continued methodically wiping down a blue puzzle mat with a damp, soapy rag. "I don't train cage fighters, Lyra. The cage is entirely about ego. I left ego behind a very long time ago.""I have the amateur state championship fight in exactly three weeks," Lyra pleaded. "Winning is my only way to pay off my mother's medical debt. It's my only way to secure a future for my brother. But after what Kael did to me... I'm terrified. Every single time I close my eyes to sleep, I vividly feel his massive arm crushing my neck. I feel completely, utterly helpless. I don't want to learn how to hurt people, Vance. I just want to learn how to never be helpless again."Vance stopped wiping the mat. He slowly stood up, looking intensely at her neck, where the faint, ugly yellow and green remnants of Kael's brutal grip still lingered on her skin. He let out a long, heavy sigh.
