Chapter 9: Sins of the Past"I was exactly like Kael once," Vance said quietly, walking over to a small wooden bench and sitting heavily. "I was full of unquenchable fire. Full of toxic pride. Thirty years ago, I was the most terrifying Judoka on the East Coast. I was vicious, I was fast, and I was deeply, fundamentally arrogant."Lyra sat on the mat across from him, listening intently."I competed in the national finals," Vance continued, his eyes focusing on a dark memory. "I caught a good, honorable man in a standing Kimura lock. He knew he was caught. He tapped clearly on my shoulder. I felt it. The referee saw it. But the crowd was roaring, Lyra. The lights were blinding. I didn't want a submission; I wanted a spectacle. I ignored the tap. I violently cranked the technique with every ounce of strength I had, and I threw him."Vance's hands, resting on his knees, trembled slightly. "I permanently ruined his cervical spine that day. He never walked again. Because of my ego, a father of three was confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. I was stripped of my medals, banned from competition, and entirely disgraced. But the worst punishment was the silence in my own mind. It took me a miserable, agonizing lifetime to learn that true, absolute power is the conscious restraint of power. If you learn to fight just to destroy your demons, you will inevitably become one."He looked at Lyra, seeing the desperate, frightened girl beneath the tough exterior."I will not teach you to conquer others. I will only teach you to conquer yourself. Be here tomorrow morning at 5 AM sharp. Leave your ego outside the door."Chapter 10: The Philosophy of WaterFor the next three grueling weeks, Vance didn't teach Lyra how to throw a single punch, a single kick, or a single offensive submission. Instead, he broke her down to the absolute foundation. He taught her how to breathe. He introduced her to the deep concept of Kuzushi—the ancient art of unbalancing an opponent. He forced her to put on a blindfold while he gently, then forcefully, pushed and pulled her across the mats, demanding she learn to physically feel the microscopic shifts in his center of weight."When they push you, you pull them," Vance instructed, his voice a constant, incredibly calming drone in the quiet room. "When they pull you, you push them. Do not ever resist the river, Lyra. You will drown. You must divert it."Most importantly, he aggressively trained her mind. He repeatedly put her in incredibly tight, physically uncomfortable grappling positions, simulating Kael's crushing weight, forcing her to confront the suffocating claustrophobia and blinding panic that had infected her psyche."The physical body will endure whatever the mind accepts," Vance would say softly as he held her in a deep, simulated chokehold, refusing to let go until her wildly fluttering heart rate settled into a slow, rhythmic beat. "Find your breath. Right here, in the dead center of the violent storm, you must become the calm."Slowly, agonizingly, the deep psychological trauma began to untangle. Lyra stopped fighting with frantic, exhausting desperation and started moving with purposeful, incredibly lethal fluidity. She was learning to flow around the obstacles rather than desperately smashing into them.
