"Mr. Carter!" Julian beamed, grasping Elias’s rough, paint-stained hand and shaking it warmly. "Welcome back, sir! I didn't know you were dropping by today. If you'd called, I would have had coffee waiting in the back."

The silence that fell over the room was absolute. It was so quiet you could hear the microscopic ticking of a hundred mechanical movements inside their cases.

Chloe stood paralyzed behind the counter. Her arms, which had been defensively crossed, slowly fell to her sides. All the color drained from her face, leaving her pale and trembling. Her brain struggled to process the scene in front of her. The impeccably dressed, highly intimidating store manager was bowing and scraping to the vagrant.

"Julian," Elias said, a faint, tired smile finally touching his lips. "Good to see you, son. How's the new inventory system?"

"Working perfectly, sir," Julian replied smoothly. "Much more efficient. How is the community center coming along? I see you've been in the trenches today."

"Getting there," Elias nodded, brushing a bit of dust off his sleeve. "The library is taking shape."

Chloe felt as though the floor were tilting beneath her. She looked at Julian, her voice a fragile, breathy squeak. "You... you know him?"

Julian turned to Chloe, his smile vanishing instantly. He looked at her as if she had suddenly grown a second head. He noticed her defensive posture, remembered the harsh tone he had heard as he walked out, and put two and two together. The atmosphere in the room was suddenly charged with a lethal kind of electricity.

"Know him?" Julian said, his voice laced with cold disbelief. He gestured respectfully toward Elias. "Chloe... this is Mr. Elias Carter. He is the owner of this store. He owns the building. He owns the entire Aurelia brand."

The words hung in the air like a death sentence.

Owner of the store.

Chloe felt a cold sweat break out on the back of her neck. She looked at the old man. Really looked at him this time. Past the dirty jacket and the dusty pants, she saw the posture. The quiet, unshakeable confidence. The eyes that were sharp, intelligent, and currently boring holes directly into her soul.

She had just threatened to call security on a man who could buy and sell her entire bloodline with the stroke of a pen.

"Mr. Carter..." Chloe stammered, her voice shaking violently. She gripped the edge of the glass display case to keep her knees from giving out. "I... I am so sorry. I didn't realize... I didn't know who you were. Your clothes..."
