“Why?”

Vale replied softly.

“Because Daniel believed someone was watching the family.”

“Who?”

“We never knew.”

Mara stared at her mother’s file.

“Did she create the blackmail network?”

“No.”

“How can you know?”

“Because Daniel proved she tried to dismantle it.”

“Then who built it?”

Vale looked toward the monitor.

“Someone who worked beside her.”

Mara searched linked personnel.

Several names appeared.

One made her stomach drop.

KNOX, THOMAS.

She turned toward Owen.

His face had gone completely white.

“My father,” he whispered.

Mara stared at him.

Knox backed away from the screen.

“No.”

Vale nodded.

“Your father worked with Elizabeth Vance.”

Knox’s jaw trembled.

“My father was infantry.”

“Afterward.”

“He died when I was twelve.”

Vale did not respond.

Knox suddenly understood.

“You’re saying that was fake too?”

“We believe Thomas Knox disappeared.”

Knox looked as though he wanted to tear the room apart.

“Where is he?”

“We don’t know.”

Mara’s thoughts raced.

Two families.

Vance.

Knox.

Connected decades before she and Owen ever met.

Their parents.

Harbor.

Daniel.

None of this was coincidence.

Mara turned to Vale.

“You knew about this when Knox enlisted.”

“Yes.”

“You recruited him because of his father.”

“Yes.”

Knox lunged.

Mercer caught him before he reached Vale.

Knox struggled violently.

“You used me!”

Vale remained still.

“Your entire career!”

“I provided opportunities.”

“You put me beside Daniel!”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because we believed one of you might eventually lead us to your parents.”

Silence filled the room.

Mara whispered:

“Our parents were working together.”

Vale nodded.

“Until they vanished in different ways.”

“My mother did not vanish.”

Vale looked at her with something approaching pity.

May you like

“No.”

A terrible feeling settled over Mara.

“What?”

Vale reached into the safe again.

He withdrew another envelope.

This one looked worn from repeated handling.

He set it in front of Mara.

The handwriting belonged to her mother.

Mara, if Daniel fails, you must never know what we did.

Mara unfolded the paper with shaking hands.

Elizabeth wrote about a project developed decades earlier to identify personnel susceptible to coercion.

The work had originally been meant to protect people.

Then it was corrupted.

Psychological profiles became leverage.

Leverage became control.

When Elizabeth Vance and Thomas Knox realized what was happening, they attempted to expose the operation.

Thomas disappeared.

Elizabeth escaped.

Changed careers.

Raised her children.

Stayed silent.

Years later, Daniel entered Special Operations and unknowingly stepped directly into a descendant of the same program.

History had returned to the same families.

The last paragraph made Mara’s skin go cold.

If Daniel cannot stop them, there is one person left who can.

Not you.

The other child.

Mara looked up.

“What other child?”

Vale’s expression tightened.

“I don’t know.”

Knox stared at him.

“My father had another kid?”

“No record indicates that.”

Mara reread the sentence.

Not you.

The other child.

She thought of Daniel.

Then herself.

A memory rose from childhood.

Her mother sitting alone at the kitchen table late at night.

Crying over an old photograph.

Mara had been nine.

“Who’s that?” she had asked.

Elizabeth quickly hid the picture.

“Someone I lost.”

Mara had always assumed her mother meant Mara’s father.

Perhaps she had been wrong.

“Where did you get this letter?” Mara asked.

Vale hesitated.

“Daniel.”

“When?”

“The night he died.”

“He handed it to you?”

“No.”

Mercer had become very still.

Vale noticed.

“What is it?”

Mercer stared at the handwriting.

“I’ve seen that writing.”

Mara turned sharply.

“Where?”
