Mara visited twice.

The first visit lasted thirteen minutes.

The second lasted three hours.

Forgiveness had not arrived yet.

But conversation had.

Sometimes that was enough.

Mara herself received six offers.

Intelligence.

Training.

Investigations.

Special Operations liaison assignments.

She rejected every one.

Instead, she returned to the selection center.

Not as a candidate.

As a member of the team rebuilding it.

The old sign came down.

The underground complex was sealed.

Training policies were rewritten.

Independent medical authority was established.

Anonymous reporting received protection.

Instructor rotations became mandatory.

And one sentence appeared in bold letters in every classroom:

TOUGHNESS WITHOUT ETHICS IS NOT STRENGTH.

Six months after Mercer’s arrest, Mara stood beside the same black combat mat where the entire story had begun.

Twenty-one new candidates surrounded her.

They looked nervous.

Good.

Nervousness meant they understood that something mattered.

Knox leaned casually against the wall wearing civilian clothes.

Daniel watched through the observation window.

Elizabeth had refused to attend.

Elias sat near the rear, pretending he had little interest in what was happening.

Mara addressed the class.

“You are going to be tired here.”

No one moved.

“You are going to become frustrated.”

She walked slowly in front of them.

“You will fail events. You will make poor decisions. People will see you embarrassed.”

Several candidates exchanged looks.

“But no one here is permitted to strip away your dignity and call it training.”

Knox lowered his gaze.

Mara continued.

“And if an instructor crosses that line, I expect you to speak.”

A tall candidate raised one hand.

“What if that instructor outranks us?”

Mara gave a slight smile.

“Especially then.”

Elias grinned from the back row.

Mara saw him.

“Something funny?”

“No, ma’am.”

“Come down here.”

His grin disappeared.

Knox covered his mouth to hide a smile.

Daniel began laughing behind the observation glass.

Elias reluctantly approached the mat.

Mara pointed toward the center.

“Since you seem to be enjoying yourself, demonstrate basic defensive positioning.”

Elias stepped into place.

Mara faced him.

“Ready?”

“I was born ready.”

“You definitely inherited your father’s mouth.”

Behind the glass, Daniel looked personally offended.

Mara attacked lightly.

Elias slipped aside.

Fast.

Very fast.

Mara stopped.

The room became quiet.

Elias smiled.

“You drop your left side.”

Knox burst into laughter.

Mara stared at Elias.

Then Knox.

Then Daniel behind the observation window.

Daniel immediately raised both hands.

Not me.

Mara turned back toward Elias.

“Who taught you that?”

He shrugged.

“Grandma.”

Mara slowly looked toward the gym entrance.

Elizabeth stood there.

Seventy-two years old.

Short gray hair.

Simple blue jacket.

Walking cane in one hand.

A small smile on her face.

Mara stared at her.

Elizabeth stepped farther into the room.

“You children always did make too much noise.”

Knox whispered:

“No way.”

Elizabeth handed her cane to Elias.

Then walked onto the mat.

Mara laughed.

“You’re seventy-two.”

“Thank you for noticing.”

“Mom.”

Elizabeth rolled her shoulders.

The movement was smooth.

Experienced.

Mara’s smile disappeared.

Daniel came out of the observation room.

May you like

“Mom, don’t.”

Elizabeth turned toward him.

“You be quiet. You faked your death twice.”

The candidates struggled not to laugh.

Daniel immediately stopped talking.

Elizabeth faced Mara.

“For twenty years, people assumed Harbor’s techniques came from generals.”

She lifted her hands.

“Men like Vale took credit for things they barely understood.”

Mara stared at her mother.

“You?”

Elizabeth smiled.

“I told you I helped design the assessments.”

“You never told me you designed the combat system.”

“Daniel never asked.”

Daniel looked offended again.

Mara glanced at Knox.

He was openly laughing now.

Elias moved off the mat.

Elizabeth nodded toward her daughter.

“Come on.”

“Seriously?”

“Unless becoming an officer made you slow.”

That was enough.

Mara stepped forward.
