Maya removed neither.

A supervisor approached row 14.

“Miss Washington?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Denise Harper.”

Maya nodded.

“May I ask what happened?”

Karen appeared several feet behind Denise.

Maya noticed immediately.

“Can we talk without her standing there?”

Denise looked over her shoulder.

Karen stiffened.

“Karen, give us a minute.”

Karen opened her mouth.

Denise repeated herself.

“A minute.”

Karen walked away.

For the first time since Henderson had appeared, Maya felt someone had actually heard a request.

Denise crouched beside the aisle.

“Start from the beginning.”

Maya glanced toward first class.

“My boarding pass says 2A.”

Denise nodded.

“I boarded normally.”

“Okay.”

“I was sitting there when another passenger said I was in his seat.”

“Henderson?”

“Yes.”

“Charles Henderson?”

Maya nodded.

Denise’s expression remained neutral.

“Then Karen took both passes.”

“What happened after that?”

“She wouldn’t tell me which pass actually showed 2A.”

Denise tapped something into her tablet.

“What did she say?”

“That Mr. Henderson had Platinum Elite status.”

Denise stopped typing.

Only briefly.

Maya noticed.

“She offered you 14E?”

“Yes.”

“And you refused?”

“I said I wanted the seat I purchased.”

“What happened next?”

“Captain Davies came.”

Maya described the conversation.

She repeated his choice exactly.

Take 14E.

Or leave the aircraft.

Denise’s eyes lifted.

“He said you would be removed?”

“Yes.”

“For refusing a crew instruction?”

“Yes.”

“Were you standing?”

“No.”

“Shouting?”

“No.”

“Blocking the aisle?”

“No.”

“Threatening anyone?”

“No.”

Sarah called from several rows ahead.

“She wasn’t.”

Davies looked toward her.

Sarah ignored him.

“She never raised her voice.”

Denise nodded.

“Thank you.”

Then she looked at Maya again.

“What happened after you agreed to move?”

Maya reached into her backpack.

Karen immediately moved forward.

“Denise.”

Everyone looked at her.

Karen stopped.

Denise held up one hand.

“Let her answer.”

Maya opened the Baldwin book.

She removed the boarding pass.

Denise accepted it.

Her eyes narrowed.

“Who wrote this?”

“Karen gave it back like that.”

Denise examined the word beside 2A.

REASSIGNED.

“When was this written?”

“I don’t know.”

“Was it there when you boarded?”

“No.”

“You’re sure?”

“I looked at the pass several times.”

Sarah spoke again.

“It wasn’t there.”

Denise turned.

“You saw it?”

“Yes.”

“Before the dispute?”

“Yes.”

Karen stepped closer.

“I wrote it after the reassignment.”

Denise looked at her.

“Why?”

“To document the new seat.”

“Where was the electronic reassignment?”

Karen hesitated.

Maya saw it.

So did Denise.

“I was handling boarding.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Karen swallowed.

Denise stood.

“Where is the electronic record?”

Karen glanced toward Davies.

Davies looked away.

Henderson finally closed his laptop.

“What exactly is going on?”

Nobody answered him.

For perhaps the first time that afternoon, Charles Henderson was being ignored.

He did not seem accustomed to it.

Denise handed Maya’s boarding pass back.

“Keep this.”

Maya slid it into her book again.

Karen watched.

Denise noticed.

“Was there something else?”

Maya hesitated.

Karen’s face changed.

Denise saw that too.

“What happened after she moved?”

Maya looked directly at Karen.

“She asked for my phone.”

Denise became very still.

Davies turned sharply.

“What?”

Karen spoke immediately.

“That’s not what happened.”

Maya’s pulse hammered.

“You told me, ‘Give me your phone.’”

“I asked whether you had recorded crew members.”

“You demanded my phone first.”

Karen shook her head.

“She’s upset.”

Maya felt heat rise into her face.

There it was.

Not mistaken.
