Not confused.
Upset.
A word that could explain away everything Maya said.
Denise looked between them.
“Why were you asking about recordings?”
Karen folded her arms.
“I was concerned she might have recorded a private crew conversation.”
“I was sitting in 14E.”
“You had your phone out.”
“I was texting my father.”
The words changed the air.
Karen stared at Maya.
Denise asked, “Your father?”
“Yes.”
“What did you tell him?”
“The truth.”
Davies rubbed his forehead.
Henderson sighed loudly.
“Can we please depart?”
Denise ignored him.
“What did your father say?”
Maya unlocked her phone.
She hesitated before showing the screen.
The message was private.
But it was also evidence.
She turned the display toward Denise.
Denise read Maya’s message first.
Then Marcus’ response.
DON’T DELETE ANYTHING.
Denise looked at Maya.
“Who is your father?”
Maya lowered the phone.
“Marcus Washington.”
Silence.
Karen’s face drained.
Davies stared at Maya.
Henderson stopped touching his laptop.
Denise blinked once.
“Governor Washington?”
Maya nodded.
“Yes.”
Nobody spoke.
Maya hated the silence immediately.
It was exactly what she had wanted to avoid.
She had wanted to travel as Maya.
Not as the governor’s daughter.
Not as someone requiring special treatment.
Just Maya.
Karen looked almost offended.
“You should have told us.”
Maya stared at her.
“Why?”
Karen had no answer.
“Would my ticket have mattered more?”
“That isn’t what I meant.”
“Then what did you mean?”
Davies stepped forward.
“Miss Washington, perhaps we should reset.”
Maya looked at him.
“Reset what?”
“The situation.”
“You already threatened to remove me.”
“I was trying to maintain order.”
“I was sitting down.”
Davies’ face tightened.
“We were under departure pressure.”
“So was everyone else.”
Denise raised a hand.
“Captain.”
Davies stopped.
Denise turned to Maya.
“Did your father contact anyone?”
“I don’t know.”
“You didn’t ask him to?”
“No.”
“What exactly did you ask him?”
Maya showed her message again.
Denise read the final sentence.
Please don’t fix my seat because you’re Governor.
Denise slowly handed back the phone.
Something changed in her expression.
Not fear.
Respect.
Maya felt no satisfaction.
She mostly felt tired.
Karen looked toward the aircraft door.
A man in a dark suit had appeared outside.
He spoke briefly with the gate manager.
Then another airline executive joined him.
Passengers began whispering.
Someone said, “Governor?”
Someone else said, “That’s his daughter?”
Maya sank slightly into 14E.
This was becoming precisely what she had tried to prevent.
Denise leaned toward her.
“You did nothing wrong by contacting your parent.”
Maya nodded.
“I know.”
Karen heard it.
Her hands tightened.
The dark-suited executive boarded.
He introduced himself quietly to Denise.
They moved toward the galley.
Maya caught only one phrase.
“Corporate legal.”
Karen heard it too.
Her shoulders dropped.
Davies stared through the cockpit door.
Henderson finally stood.
“I was assigned this seat.”
Denise turned toward him.
“Mr. Henderson, please sit down.”
“I need to understand whether I’m being blamed for this.”
“No one is discussing blame with you.”
“I have Platinum Elite status.”
Maya almost laughed.
He said it as though the words should settle everything.
Denise remained unmoved.
“Please sit down.”
Henderson did.
That was the first visible shift.
Minutes earlier, his status had been enough to displace Maya.
Now nobody seemed impressed by it.
Maya watched without enjoying it.
She did not want Henderson humiliated.
She wanted someone to answer the original question.
Whose boarding pass belonged to 2A?
Denise disappeared toward the front.
The corporate representative joined her.
They checked the tablet.
They checked another device.
They spoke to the gate agent.
Karen remained nearby.
Her confidence had vanished.
Sarah returned to her seat across from 2A.
She looked back toward Maya.
Their eyes met.
Sarah gave one small nod.
Maya returned it.
No smile.
Not yet.
The executive finally approached Henderson.
“Mr. Henderson, may I see your boarding pass?”
Henderson handed it over.
The executive examined it.
His eyebrows lifted.
He showed it to Denise.
