Claire nodded.
“I'll try.”
She took a breath.
Then she began telling her story.
Marcus listened.
The gas station fell quiet.
Nobody laughed.
Nobody whispered.
Nobody looked away anymore.
Because now they understood something important.
Sometimes the most dangerous situation isn't the one where everyone is shouting.
Sometimes it is the quiet moment when someone is too afraid to ask for help.
And sometimes, changing that situation requires only one person willing to stop.
Marcus had not come to the gas station looking for trouble.
He had simply wanted fuel before continuing his journey.
He had no idea who Claire was.
He had no idea what had happened to her.
He had no idea how complicated the situation would become.
But as he stood beside her under the fading evening sky, he knew one thing.
He had made the right decision by stopping.
And this was only the beginning.
Because as the police began their investigation, Claire revealed one final detail that would change everything.
The man who had been keeping her there was not acting alone.
And somewhere nearby, another person was watching Marcus.
Waiting.
Watching.
And already planning what would happen next.
The police officers immediately began separating the people who had been standing around Claire.
The atmosphere at the gas station had changed completely.
Only twenty minutes earlier, it had been an ordinary evening. Travelers had been buying drinks, drivers had been filling their tanks, and the employees had been preparing for the night shift.
Now, everyone was watching in silence.
Claire sat on a bench near the entrance of the station.
One officer stayed beside her while the other spoke with Marcus.
“Sir, you said you were the one who first approached her?”
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.”
“What exactly did you see?”
Marcus carefully explained everything.
“I arrived around twenty minutes ago. I noticed her standing near those people. She looked frightened. I saw the chain around her wrists, so I asked if she was okay.”
“And?”
“She didn't answer at first.”
The officer wrote something down.
“Then what happened?”
“She eventually asked me not to leave.”
“Did you know her before today?”
“No.”
“Did you have any connection with the people she was with?”
“No.”
The officer looked at Marcus for several seconds.
“Did you threaten anyone?”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
“Did you touch anyone?”
“No.”
“Did you try to remove the chain?”
“No.”
The officer nodded.
“That matches what we've heard from the witnesses.”
Marcus looked toward Claire.
“Is she okay?”
“She is frightened, but she's cooperating.”
Marcus nodded.
“Good.”
The officer closed his notebook.
“Thank you for stopping.”
Marcus shrugged.
“Anyone should have.”
The officer looked toward the people gathered around the gas station.
“Unfortunately, they didn't.”
Marcus didn't respond.
He knew exactly what the officer meant.
Dozens of people had seen something unusual.
But only one person had actually stopped.
Meanwhile, another officer was questioning the large man.
His name was Daniel Carter.
At first, Daniel insisted that Claire was his sister.
Then he said she was his girlfriend.
Then he claimed she was confused and had been having emotional problems.
The officer noticed the inconsistencies immediately.
“You told us three different things in less than five minutes.”
Daniel became defensive.
“You're misunderstanding me.”
“Then explain clearly.”
“She was upset.”
“Why was she chained?”
Daniel hesitated.
“I was trying to protect her.”
“From what?”
Daniel didn't answer.
The officer stared at him.
“From what?”
Daniel finally said,
“She was going to hurt herself.”
The officer looked toward Claire.
Then back at Daniel.
“Did she tell you that?”
“No.”
“Did a doctor tell you that?”
“No.”
“Then why did you restrain her?”
Daniel remained silent.
The officer's expression hardened.
“Where did you get the chain?”
Daniel didn't answer.
That silence told the officer enough to know that there were more questions than answers.
Another officer returned from the gas station office.
“We checked the cameras.”
“And?”
“The footage shows Daniel arriving with Claire.”
“Alone?”
“No.”
The officer handed over several photographs.
“There were two other men.”
Marcus overheard this.
His expression changed.
He turned toward Claire.
She noticed.
“What?”
Marcus walked closer.
“They found two more people on the security footage.”
Claire looked frightened.
“They were there.”
“Who?”
“I don't know their names.”
“What did they look like?”
Claire closed her eyes for a moment, trying to remember.
“One was tall.”
“Anything else?”
“He had a scar near his left eyebrow.”
Marcus nodded.
“And the other?”
“He was older.”
“How old?”
“Maybe fifty.”
“Gray hair?”
Claire nodded.
“Did either of them speak to you?”
Claire hesitated.
“The older one.”
“What did he say?”
Claire looked down.
“He said they were waiting for someone.”
Marcus frowned.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“Did they mention a name?”
Claire thought for several seconds.
