THE LOAF OF BREAD AT CARTER'S

Chapter I: The Empty Clasp and the Warm Counter

A soft afternoon rain tapped rhythmically against the large front window of Carter’s Artisan Bakery. Inside, the rich scent of freshly baked sourdough, brioche, and roasted coffee beans filled the cozy, warm shop. Shelves stacked high with golden baguettes lined the wooden back walls.

Standing at the marble counter was an elderly woman dressed in a modest sky-blue knit cardigan over a beige blouse, her silver hair neatly pinned. In her hands, she rested a large, freshly baked artisan sourdough loaf on the counter.

She opened a vintage, worn brown leather coin purse with trembling fingers, peering inside only to find a few copper coins and an empty receipt.

A look of quiet sorrow and distress swept over her face.

"I... I don't have enough," she murmured softly, her voice catching in her throat.

Standing behind the register in an olive-green polo and a dark maroon work apron was Lucas, a kind-eyed nineteen-year-old bakery clerk. Lucas offered a gentle, reassuring smile. Without a moment’s hesitation, he reached into his own pocket, pulled out a folded twenty-dollar bill from his personal tips, and pressed it flat beside the payment terminal.

"I'll cover the rest," Lucas said warmly.
