"You can't do that!"
A harsh, booming shout shattered the peaceful hum of the bakery.
Storming out from the kitchen doorway with an enraged scowl was David Carter, the franchise store manager. Wearing a navy-blue apron over a gray shirt, Carter shoved his way to the counter, glaring down at the cash with open disgust.
"Company operational policy strictly forbids subsidizing non-paying customers!" Carter barked, pointing an aggressive, accusing finger right into Lucas's face. "Every gram of flour is accounted for! If she doesn't have the cash, put the loaf back on the rack and escort her out!"
Lucas didn't flinch. He stood tall, looking his angry manager straight in the eye with unyielding resolve.
"She deserves to eat, Mr. Carter."
"You're defying management on the floor!" Carter sneered. "Hand over your apron, clock out, and consider yourself terminated!"
Chapter III: The Call from the Counter
The elderly woman gasped, clutching the warm sourdough loaf tightly against her chest as tears began to stream freely down her wrinkled cheeks.
She looked at Lucas with overwhelming emotion, deeply moved by the young man's willingness to sacrifice his job for a stranger’s dignity.
