“I asked you to keep her safe.”

“You never told me why.”

“You weren't supposed to know.”

Cynthia laughed bitterly.

“That's what everyone says.”

She reached into her purse.

Pulled out a key.

And handed it to Elise.

“Your mother gave me this ten years ago.”

“The red cabinet.”

“The cabinet from the old archive.”

“There's a letter inside.”

“From whom?”

“From the person who really changed the passenger list.”

Chapter 17

The red cabinet was hidden beneath Meridian's old executive library.

The key fit.

Inside was one envelope.

No logo.

No seal.

Just Elise's name.

Her fingers shook.

Thomas stood behind her.

Her mother sat in a wheelchair beside the window.

Emma stood at the door.

Marcus watched Elise.

Rachel had a camera ready.

Elise opened the envelope.

The letter began simply.

Elise,

If you are reading this, then Emma has been activated.

Emma took one step closer.

I need you to understand something before you judge your mother.

She did not betray me.

She betrayed my plan.

And that saved both of you.

The letter continued.

I wanted to disappear.

Not because I wanted to leave my daughters.

Because I believed I could make the people hunting Bellwether reveal themselves.

Emma was the bait.

Elise was the heir they could not afford to lose.

I believed I could separate them temporarily and reunite them when the threat passed.

I was wrong.

Their mother had discovered that the enemy had access to my private trust credentials.

If Emma had boarded that aircraft, she would have disappeared forever.

So she changed the passenger list.

She sent Emma away.

And she changed mine.

Elise looked at Thomas.

“I learned later.”

She continued.

The crash was real.

The disappearance was real.

But the person who rerouted that aircraft was not acting for me.

Someone was trying to create a death that would trigger the trust early.

That death would unlock North Meridian.

“North Meridian.”

Rachel took the letter.

Her face hardened.

“They wanted him officially dead.”

“Yes,” Thomas said.

“Because the trust could transfer control.”

“But if Dad was alive, why didn't he come home?”

“Because I became evidence.”

“Once the world believed I was dead, anyone looking for the trust stopped looking for me.”

“And Mom?”

Thomas's voice lowered.

“She became the keeper.”

“The keeper of what?”

“The original trust.”

Her mother pointed to the letter.

“The visible company belonged to Elise.”

She looked at Emma.

“The hidden rights belonged to both daughters.”

Elise absorbed that.

“So nobody could control Bellwether without us.”

“Then why does Walter say someone already does?”

“Because someone has been using an emergency clause.”

Rachel flipped the letter over.

There was writing on the back.

Three words.

DO NOT SIGN TOGETHER.

Emma read them.

“It means the trust was never designed for agreement.”

“It required both daughters.”

“So why tell us not to sign together?”

“Because the moment both of you sign at the same time, the shadow trust wakes up.”

“And what happens then?”

Thomas looked toward her mother.

“The trust chooses a trustee.”

Rachel went pale.

“And if the trustee is already compromised?”

“Then they control everything.”

Elise whispered,

“Who is the trustee?”

Finally, Thomas spoke.

“Me.”

“You're the trustee.”

“I was.”

“Was?”

“The position was transferred ten years ago.”

Thomas looked at Elise.

“To your mother.”

Elise turned toward the woman who had spent a decade hiding behind lies.

Her mother whispered,

“I never wanted it.”

“Then who did you transfer it to?”

Elise understood.

“You gave it to someone else.”

“Not willingly.”

She opened them.

Marcus reached for his weapon.

But Walter's voice came from the hallway.

“That's not exactly what happened.”

Chapter 18

Walter walked into the room slowly.

The red ledger was under his arm.

“You're the trustee?”

“Mom says she transferred it to you.”

“She attempted to.”

Walter placed the ledger on the desk.

“Your mother tried to put me in front of the trust.”

“To keep it away from the man who was supposed to inherit it.”

Nobody moved.

“Your father built the system.”

“He built the trust.”

“He controlled the visible company.”

“He controlled the original trust.”

“Then why would Mom hide it from him?”

Walter looked at her.

“Because your father stopped trusting himself.”

Thomas's jaw tightened.

“I had reasons.”

“You had ambition.”

“I had a responsibility.”

“You had obsession.”

Elise stepped between them.

Both men stopped.

“I don't care which one of you thinks he was the hero ten years ago.”

She pointed at the ledger.

“I want facts.”

He opened it.

“Your grandfather added a clause called Fourth Signature.”

Rachel moved closer.

“What does it require?”

“Four authorizations.”

She counted.

“Thomas. The mother. Elise. Emma.”

“But we already have all four people.”

“Not the way the trust defines them.”

Rachel read the text.

Her mouth fell open.

“The signatures have to be voluntary.”

“No coercion. No threat. No financial pressure.”

“No proxy.”

“So?”

Walter smiled grimly.

“So whoever has been forcing the conversion has been trying to make one of you sign under duress.”

Emma understood first.

“The hospital.”

“They took Mom.”

“To force us.”

“Then why bring them together?”

Walter looked at him.

“Because the shadow trust only activates when both daughters are physically present.”

A notification appeared.

JOINT PROXIMITY CONFIRMED.

Rachel stared.

“It's measuring their devices.”

“Aster tracks both of them.”

“So someone knows we're together.”

“They have known for hours.”

Rachel began typing.

“I can disable it.”

“Not anymore.”

“Because Aster already opened.”

A new document appeared on Rachel's tablet.

A legal certificate.

The title read:

SUCCESSION EVENT INITIATED.

Below it were the names:

ELISE MORGAN

EMMA MORGAN

Rachel scrolled.

“The board vote is irrelevant.”
