He said the name.
The room erupted.
“That recording was altered.”
Marcus laughed.
“You're running out of lies.”
Walter's composure finally broke.
“You think you understand what happened?”
Walter pointed at Daniel.
Everyone looked at Daniel.
“Daniel was there the night Thomas died.”
“Were you?” Elise asked.
“Did Walter order the crash?”
Daniel's voice broke.
Daniel looked at Emma.
“Your father did.”
Daniel's eyes were full of regret.
“Thomas discovered someone was preparing to take Bellwether. He arranged the crash as a disappearance.”
“That makes no sense,” Elise said.
“It does when you realize the plane was never supposed to carry him alone.”
“Stop.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Thomas planned to disappear with Emma.”
Emma shook her head.
“I wasn't there.”
“No,” Daniel said.
“Because someone changed the route.”
Elise felt the room tilt.
Daniel looked at Walter.
Then at Cynthia.
Then finally at Elise.
“Your mother.”
“My mother?”
“She changed the passenger list.”
“Because she wanted you protected.”
Elise's voice trembled.
“Protected from whom?”
Everyone looked at the young woman.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It does when you learn what Bellwether required.”
Daniel pointed to the screen.
“The trust has a succession clause.”
Rachel opened the file.
Her expression changed.
Elise moved beside her.
“Both daughters must consent to a transfer.”
“And if one refuses?”
“Control remains frozen.”
Walter smiled faintly.
“Which is why nobody has been able to move Bellwether completely.”
“The four hundred and eighty million.”
“Was a trigger.”
“A forced conversion.”
Rachel shook her head.
“That's illegal.”
Walter's smile returned.
“Only if the system recognizes who actually controls the trust.”
Elise's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
OPEN YOUR BANK ACCOUNT.
She did.
The transfer was no longer frozen.
Four hundred and eighty million dollars had moved.
But not into Bellwether.
Into an account bearing a different name.
Emma stared at her own phone.
“I didn't do that.”
Another message appeared.
YOUR SISTER HAS BEEN ACTIVATED.
Then a final line.
NOW COME ALONE.
Across the boardroom, Walter was gone.
The security doors had locked.
Rachel was trying to override them.
Cynthia was calling Emma's name.
Marcus was reaching for his weapon.
Daniel was staring at the bank statement as though he had seen it before.
And Elise understood one terrible thing.
The woman in 2A had never been the real threat.
She had been the invitation.
The real game had only just begun.
The phone vibrated one last time.
Taken less than an hour earlier.
Standing beside a hospital bed.
Someone was lying in it.
Elise zoomed in.
Her blood went cold.
The patient had her mother's face.
The message beneath the photograph contained only six words.
HE WANTS BOTH DAUGHTERS TO COME HOME.
Chapter 11
For one terrible second, Elise forgot how to breathe.
Thomas Morgan was alive.
Her mother was alive.
And somehow the two people she had spent ten years believing belonged to her past were standing together in a photograph taken less than an hour ago.
The phone slipped in her hand.
“Give it to me,” Emma whispered.
Elise handed it over.
Emma stared at the screen.
She didn't cry.
That frightened Elise more than tears would have.
Her face had gone completely still.
“That's him,” Emma said.
Her voice was barely audible.
“My father.”
Marcus moved closer.
“Rachel.”
“I’m already tracing it.”
Rachel had the boardroom computer open, fingers moving rapidly over the keyboard.
“There’s no embedded location data,” she said. “The file was stripped.”
“Can you recover anything?”
“Give me thirty seconds.”
“We don't have thirty seconds,” Marcus said.
The security doors behind them clicked.
Then the lights flickered.
Emma looked toward the ceiling.
“What was that?”
“The building just switched to emergency isolation,” Rachel said.
Walter had disappeared.
Not slipped away.
Disappeared.
The chair where he had been sitting was empty, and the side exit he had used was sealed from the inside.
Daniel stared at it.
“He knew.”
Elise turned sharply.
“Knew what?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Marcus grabbed the electronic lock panel and pulled the casing away.
“I see it.”
“Someone is remotely controlling the locks.”
“Then Walter didn't leave.”
Her stomach dropped.
“He's still in the building.”
“Or someone wants us to think he is.”
A loud metallic bang echoed somewhere beyond the hallway.
Emma flinched.
Elise grabbed her hand.
“Stay with me.”
Emma looked down at their joined hands.
Neither pulled away.
Rachel suddenly looked up.
“I found something.”
She rotated the monitor.
A single line appeared in a diagnostic window.
HARBOR MEDICAL — PRIVATE WING C — INTERNAL TRANSFER.
“What is Harbor Medical?”
Daniel answered immediately.
“Private hospital.”
“Outside the city. Twenty minutes from here.”
“That's not where the message came from.”
She pulled the image file into another program.
“The photograph was uploaded from somewhere else. But the last hospital system that opened the image was Harbor Medical.”
Marcus swore under his breath.
Elise looked back at the photograph.
Thomas.
Her mother.
A hospital bed.
“Let's go.”
Marcus caught her arm.
“You were told to come alone.”
“So you're not going.”
“I am.”
“Not without me.”
“This is my family.”
“And someone locked us inside a boardroom after transferring nearly half a billion dollars into your sister's account.”
Marcus's voice lowered.
“That makes it my problem too.”
Elise almost argued.
Then Emma spoke.
“I’m coming.”
Emma straightened.
“He’s my father.”
Marcus didn't answer.
Emma looked at Elise.
“And she's my sister.”
The word hung between them.
For the first time, Elise heard it without suspicion.
Not a threat.
Not a legal term.
Not a secret.
A sister.
“All right,” Elise said.
Marcus shook his head.
“You're both impossible.”
Rachel smiled grimly.
“I'm beginning to think that's a Morgan family trait.”
She bypassed the security controls.
