The woman looked at him.
“Special Counsel Nora Vale.”
“I've heard of you.”
“Most people have.”
She looked at Thomas.
“You allowed the declaration to stand.”
“You maintained false identities.”
“You moved millions through private trusts.”
Thomas didn't deny it.
Nora nodded.
“Then we have a serious problem.”
“What exactly do you want?”
Nora looked at her.
“Both daughters.”
Emma stiffened.
“Because neither of you is accused of anything.”
“He is.”
Elise turned toward her father.
“You're under arrest?”
Nora raised a folder.
“I have authority to detain him.”
Nora opened the folder.
“Murder.”
“One person died in the crash.”
“You told us the body wasn't your father.”
“It wasn't.”
“Then whose was it?”
Nora answered.
“Unknown.”
“That isn't a murder charge.”
She turned to Thomas.
“That's why we aren't here because of the crash.”
Nora removed a photograph.
She put it on the table.
It was Thomas.
The same photograph from Chapter 10.
But there was something different.
The image was wider.
A second person was visible in the corner.
Elise recognized her.
She was holding a file.
Thomas looked at the photograph.
“The original.”
“The photograph was cropped.”
She enlarged the corner.
A name appeared on the folder Cynthia was holding.
NORTH MERIDIAN.
Cynthia began to cry.
“I knew the trust existed.”
“You knew my father was alive.”
“I knew he might be.”
“You knew Mom was in the hospital.”
“Because I was the Protector.”
“And you were working for the government?”
“She was working for your grandfather.”
“But he died.”
“His instructions did not.”
Rachel looked at Nora.
“You're saying the old trust has a living mandate?”
“To identify threats?”
“To identify whoever tried to take Bellwether.”
Nora looked at Thomas.
“And the mandate triggered ten years ago.”
“It did.”
Elise looked at her father.
“What aren't you telling us?”
Thomas was silent.
Her mother finally spoke.
“I'll tell them.”
Her mother wheeled herself forward.
“I am done protecting you.”
“Your father did not create the disappearance because he wanted to abandon you.”
“He did it because he was trying to keep the trust alive.”
“But you lied about us.”
Her mother continued.
“And I lied too.”
Elise felt tears rise.
“Because the person who wanted Bellwether didn't just want the company.”
“They wanted you.”
“Because your identity activated the trust.”
“And mine?”
“You control the visible shares.”
“So together…”
“You control everything.”
“And that's why they want you together.”
00:08:41.
“We still have a problem.”
Nora looked at the screen.
“Aster.”
“Once it reaches zero?”
Rachel swallowed.
“The trustee is appointed.”
The field was still blank.
Then letters began appearing.
T…
H…
O…
M…
A…
S.
Thomas stepped back.
The system completed the name.
“But he's already the founder.”
Nora's expression changed.
“Unless…”
“Unless what?”
Nora looked at Elise.
“Unless the system considers the man in front of us to be the original trustee.”
Thomas went pale.
“You never lost control.”
“You were hiding.”
“You were waiting.”
“For us to activate the trust.”
“I didn't know how else to get you safely back together.”
Emma stepped toward him.
“You used us.”
“I protected you.”
“You manipulated us.”
“You lied to us.”
“And now the trust gives everything back to you.”
“That's not what I want.”
Rachel interrupted.
“Then don't accept it.”
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed to the screen.
“There is another clause.”
“What clause?”
“The daughters can override the Founder.”
Rachel read the instructions.
“Both daughters must refuse the appointment.”
“What happens if we do?”
“The trust remains frozen.”
Nora asked,
“For how long?”
Rachel's face tightened.
“Until a new Protector is selected.”
Thomas looked at Cynthia.
Cynthia shook her head.
“I can't.”
“Because the Protector isn't supposed to choose herself.”
Nora stepped forward.
“She doesn't have to.”
“Then who chooses?”
Nora looked at the sisters.
“Together?”
Nora pointed to the agreement.
“Separately.”
For ten years, everyone had tried to keep them apart.
Now the trust was asking them to make separate choices.
That was the real test.
“What happens if we choose differently?”
“Then the trust splits.”
“Meaning?”
“The company, the hidden trust, and the $480 million are divided.”
“Between us?”
“And if one of us chooses Thomas?”
Rachel hesitated.
“That sister controls the Founder Fund.”
“That's what they wanted.”
Elise nodded.
“They wanted us to fight.”
“Don't let them.”
“You don't get to tell us what to do anymore.”
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“You're right.”
Emma stepped beside Elise.
For the first time, they stood shoulder to shoulder without anyone between them.
Nora checked the clock.
00:02:11.
“Decide.”
“I don't trust Dad.”
“Neither do I.”
“I don't trust Mom.”
“Walter?”
Elise glanced toward the doorway.
Daniel stood there.
His face was pale.
“I don't trust myself either.”
“That makes four.”
Elise almost smiled.
Then her phone vibrated.
They both looked down.
A message.
ONE OF YOU HAS ALREADY ACCEPTED.
THE SIGNATURE IS REAL.
Elise's blood went cold.
Rachel checked the trust interface.
Her face drained of color.
“The system has a fifth authorization.”
The name loaded.
It wasn't Thomas.
It wasn't their mother.
It wasn't Emma.
It wasn't her.
It wasn't Walter.
The screen displayed a name neither sister had seen.
A name from a trust document dated twenty-five years earlier.
A person who was legally listed as deceased.
Nora whispered,
“That can't be.”
Thomas looked at the name.
For the first time since returning from the dead, genuine terror crossed his face.
Emma grabbed his sleeve.
He slowly looked at his daughters.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“That is the person I was hiding from.”
The lights went out.
And somewhere beneath the Morgan house, a locked vault opened by itself.
