The drive to the executive hangar took less than three minutes. As we pulled up, blinding camera flashes and television broadcast vans lined the perimeter. Bright lights illuminated the red carpet leading into the massive hangar where a raised stage bore the bold, silver lettering of Apex Air alongside a newly minted banner for Crossline Holdings.
Through the glass doors, I could see Jonathan Cross standing behind the podium, adjusting his silk tie, looking every bit the triumphant corporate titan.
The backstage area of the executive hangar smelled of fresh coffee, expensive cologne, and high-stakes tension. Marcus and I slipped in through the side utility entrance, staying out of sight behind the heavy velvet curtains that framed the massive stage.
Out front, the low murmur of reporters, camera shutters, and microphone checks filled the cavernous space.
"Ladies and gentlemen," a smooth, prerecorded voice boomed over the PA system. "Please welcome the Chief Executive Officer of Apex Air, Mr. Jonathan Cross."
Polite applause rippled through the audience of journalists and regional executives.
Through a crack in the curtain, I watched Jonathan step up to the podium, flashing his trademark charismatic smile—the same smile he had used to charm the board into appointing him three years ago.
"Thank you, everyone, for being here tonight," Jonathan began, his voice rich and confident as it echoed off the metal rafters. "For over a decade, Apex Air has been a leader in commercial aviation logistics. But tonight, we take a monumental leap forward. I am proud to formally announce our strategic acquisition and merger with Crossline Holdings—a pioneering logistics and supply-chain innovator that will immediately integrate into our regional infrastructure."
In the front row, Jillian Cross beamed, clapping enthusiastically, her phone clutched tightly in her hand like a talisman.
Jonathan raised a hand, calling for quiet as cameras flashed furiously from the press corps.
"This partnership represents a twelve-million-dollar capital injection into our combined networks," Jonathan continued, puffing out his chest. "As of this afternoon, all regulatory hurdles have been cleared, the funds have successfully transferred, and Crossline Holdings is officially part of the Apex family. We are moving forward into a bold new era of growth—unhindered, unobstructed, and fully capitalized."
He paused, soaking in the applause.
"Are there any questions?" Jonathan asked, scanning the audience.
A reporter from the Los Angeles Business Journal raised his hand in the third row. "Mr. Cross, financial analysts have noted that Crossline Holdings is a newly formed private entity with very little public track record. How was this twelve-million-dollar transfer approved so quickly without a formal shareholder vote?"
Jonathan didn't miss a beat. "A valid question, Tom. As CEO, emergency capital allocation clauses under our corporate charter grant me executive override authority for strategic acquisitions of this scale. The Board of Directors was fully briefed and—"
"The Board of Directors was briefed on what, exactly, Jonathan?" I asked.
