Once again, her sheer indifference burrowed under his skin, taking root in his mind and mutating into a direct challenge.

In reality, Claire Bennett was not judging his jiu-jitsu. She was internally calculating whether the synovial fluid in her surgically repaired right hip had warmed up enough to allow her to safely complete one more light drilling round with Sophie without paying for it with excruciating inflammation the next morning.

But Derek imagined judgment. That was the fatal flaw in the architecture of a massive ego; it possessed the unique ability to translate absolute silence into a deafening insult.

The buzzer sounded for the next round. Mike scanned the room and pointed. "Derek. You're with Eli."

Eli, the seventeen-year-old, one-hundred-and-forty-pound blue belt, swallowed hard. He looked terrified.

Mike stepped between them. "Derek, listen to me. Technical round. Flow. Let him work his entries. Understood?"

Derek nodded, wiping his face with his rash guard. "Yeah, coach. Technical round."

The first sixty seconds of the round went exactly as prescribed. Derek played from his back, utilizing an open guard, letting the teenager experiment with footwork and passing angles. Then, Eli saw an opening. He secured a two-on-one grip, hit a textbook, beautifully timed arm drag, stepped around Derek's hip, and for a fleeting, glorious second, managed to take the black belt's back.

From the edge of the mat, one of Eli's friends let out an excited *'Whoa!'* at the clean technique.

It was the worst thing that could have happened.

Derek's eyes went dark. The social contract of the 'technical round' was immediately violently shredded. He didn't just escape the back control; he exploded backward, driving his skull into Eli's jaw, breaking the grip, and violently stripping the teenager's hooks. He passed the boy's guard with a brutal, driving knee slice that knocked the wind out of Eli, pinned him flat to the mat in side control, and deliberately dropped the sharp point of his shoulder directly into the teenager's cheekbone, applying maximum, crushing pressure until Eli panicked and tapped the mat furiously just to relieve the pain.

They restarted on their knees. Eli was breathing hard, his eyes wide. Derek immediately grabbed a collar tie, snapped the boy's head down viciously, and hit a heavy foot sweep. Eli went airborne and landed awkwardly, his shoulder slamming into the mat with a sickening thud.

Against the wall, Claire stopped drinking her water. Her dark eyes narrowed to sharp slits.

"Derek!" Mike shouted from across the room, abandoning his own training partner. "Back it down! Now!"

Derek didn't even look up. "I am backing it down, coach!"

"No, you're damn well not!" Mike roared.

Derek flashed a cruel, mocking smile, pinning Eli's wrists to the floor.

Eli scrambled up to his feet, his face pale, clutching his shoulder. "I'm... I'm okay, coach."

Mike marched over, his face thunderous. He looked at the teenager. "Eli, you don't have to keep going with him. Sit this round out."

Eli cast a terrified, sideways glance at Derek, terrified of the social repercussions of quitting. "No, I'm good. Let's go."

Sitting by the wall, Claire felt a cold, familiar anger coil in her stomach. She had seen that exact look on a thousand young faces in a hundred different gyms over the years. It was the look of a younger, vulnerable athlete refusing to admit to physical distress because someone higher up in the tribal hierarchy had twisted the concept of 'toughness' into a toxic loyalty test.

Derek reached out to grab Eli's collar again.

This time, the silence of the room was shattered by a woman's voice.

"He said it was a technical round, right?"

Derek stopped dead. His hands hovered in the air. Every single person in the vicinity turned their head.

Derek turned slowly. "What did you say?"

Claire remained seated against the wall, her arms resting casually on her knees. She didn't raise her voice, but it carried perfectly through the quiet gym. "The coach said it was a technical round. That didn't look highly technical to me."

Derek let out a sharp, incredulous laugh, pointing a finger at her. "Thanks for the input, coach."

Claire said absolutely nothing. She just stared at him, her gaze heavy and utterly unimpressed.

The silence dragged on, gnawing at Derek's pride. "You got a problem with how I roll? You want to come out here and show me how it's done?"

Mike was moving fast now, practically sprinting across the mats. "Alright, that is enough. Derek, off the mat. Now."

But Derek was already far too deep into his own performance. He was enjoying the captive audience. He ignored Mike and took three steps toward Claire.

"You keep sitting over there giving advice," Derek sneered.
