"I gave exactly one sentence of advice," Claire corrected mildly.

"Come do a round. Prove you belong in the room."

"No."

"Why not?" Derek goaded, throwing his arms wide. "Scared?"

"Because I simply don’t want to."

Derek turned his back to her, sweeping his arms out toward the rest of the gym, addressing the crowd. "There it is, guys. Look at it."

Claire frowned, genuinely puzzled. "There what is?"

Derek spun back around, pointing a heavily taped finger inches from her face. "You. You’re exactly one of *those* people. Every gym has one. You sit on the edge of the mat, safe by the wall, critiquing everybody else's technique, talking a big game, but you never actually step up and test yourself when it counts."

Mike physically stepped between them, putting his broad chest inches from Derek's face. "Derek. I am not going to say it again. Get your gear and get out."

Behind Mike, Claire sighed. She placed her hands on the mat and pushed herself up to her feet.

Mike heard the movement and looked back over his shoulder. "Claire. Don't. No."

She ignored him entirely, stepping out from the shadow of the wall and onto the main tatami.

Derek saw her stand up, and a triumphant, predatory grin split his face. "There we go. Finally."

Claire stopped exactly six feet away from him. She stood naturally, shoulders relaxed. "Thirty seconds."

Mike grabbed Claire's arm, his voice a frantic whisper. "Claire, listen to me. Don't do this. You don't owe this arrogant punk a damn thing. Your hip—"

She looked up at her old friend. Her voice was incredibly soft, but possessed a steel core that brooked no argument. "Thirty seconds, Mike."

"I'm not going to let him hurt you."

"I know," she said quietly.

Derek laughed, a loud, booming sound that echoed off the rafters. "Relax, Mike, Jesus. Don’t worry. I’m not going to hurt her."

Claire slowly turned her head away from Mike and locked her dark eyes onto Derek's.

*I'm not going to hurt her.*

That was the sentence.

It wasn't that the words insulted her pride. It was that she had heard that exact tone, that exact phrasing, from overconfident, physically imposing men in martial arts gyms for fifteen years. It was the ultimate, sickening blend of condescension disguised as gentlemanly concern. It was a towering, arrogant confidence built entirely on a foundation of lazy assumptions about gender, size, and appearance.

She looked him up and down. "What rules are we working with?"

Derek shrugged his massive shoulders, rolling his neck until it popped. "Whatever you want. Light MMA movement? Grappling?"

Mike barked immediately, "Absolutely no striking. Period."

Derek feigned a look of deep disappointment, sighing dramatically. "Fine, coach. Grappling only."

Claire nodded once. "Standing start."

Derek’s smile returned, wide and hungry. "Perfect. I love takedowns."

Out of the corner of her eye, Claire saw Brandon hurriedly raising his smartphone, framing the two of them in the center of the mat.

Claire raised a hand, pointing directly at the camera. "No posting. Put the phone down."

Derek frowned, looking back at his friend. "Why not?"

Claire’s voice dropped in temperature, becoming cold and precise. "Because Sophie didn’t agree to become your background content. Eli didn’t agree to be your highlight reel victim. And I certainly didn’t agree to be monetized for your ego."
