Claire loaded his one hundred and eighty-five pounds of forward momentum perfectly across the fulcrum of her right hip. She didn't use muscular strength. She didn't strain, grunt, or force the movement. She simply served as a structural conduit, redirecting the violent energy he had so generously provided.

It was a textbook, devastatingly perfect variation of a *Harai Goshi*—a sweeping hip throw.

There was no gritty wrestling match. There was no prolonged, desperate scramble for balance. There was just one clean, terrifying arc of flight.

Derek’s feet were ripped violently from the floor. He went completely airborne, his legs kicking wildly toward the ceiling.

His entire facial expression cycled through three distinct phases in midair. First, the arrogant grin vanished into thin air. Second, a look of profound, primal surprise widened his eyes. Finally, right at the apex of the throw, an unmistakable look of total, helpless terror seized his features as his brain realized he had absolutely zero control over where his body was going.

He hit the mat perfectly flat on his back.

He didn't land dangerously on his neck—Claire was too skilled to allow that; she controlled the descent, guiding his rotation to ensure a flat, slapping impact. But he hit the heavy foam with enough concussive force to shake the floorboards beneath the mats. The violent impact drove every single cubic inch of oxygen from his lungs in a sharp, barking gasp.

Before Derek's concussed brain could even begin to process the fact that he was no longer standing, Claire followed him down to the mat with the inescapable gravity of a collapsing star.

She landed seamlessly in a dominant side-control position. Her right knee pinned his near hip to the floor, killing any possibility of a scramble. Her left hand maintained a bone-crushing grip on his wrist, pinning his arm to his chest. Her right hand, relaxed and open, rested with mocking gentleness against his shoulder.

She was perfectly balanced. Immovable. Stable as a mountain.

She had a dozen different avenues to end his consciousness or break a limb. She could have transitioned to a mounted triangle. She could have isolated the pinned arm for a Kimura lock. She could have dropped heavy, punishing elbows if this had been a fight.

She did absolutely none of those things.

She just knelt there in the breathless silence, looking down at his shocked, red, gasping face.

"Are we done?" she asked softly.

No one in the gym laughed.

That fact mattered more than the throw itself. If the crowd had laughed, if someone had cheered, Derek’s ego would have immediately engaged its defense mechanisms. He would have reacted with explosive, blinding anger. He would have claimed he slipped, or that he was taking it easy on her, or he would have started a physical brawl.

Instead, the entire room—forty hardened fighters, black belts, and coaches—simply stared in absolute, stunned, graveyard silence.

Derek's face was flushed a deep crimson. It wasn't from physical injury. It was from the agonizing, instantaneous dawn of understanding.

Claire held the position for exactly two more seconds to ensure the lesson had saturated his bones. Then, she casually released his wrist, pushed lightly off his chest, and stood back up, brushing her hands together.

From the moment Mike yelled "Go" to the moment Derek hit the floor, exactly seven seconds had passed on the clock on the wall.

Derek remained flat on his back, staring blankly up at the metal rafters for another three long, humiliating seconds, trying to remember how to breathe. Finally, he rolled over onto his side, coughing, and sat up slowly.

He looked up at the tiny woman standing over him. "What... what the hell was that?"

Claire extended her hand down toward him.

He stared at it as if it were a loaded weapon. Then, swallowing his shattered pride, he reached up and took it. Her grip was surprisingly strong. She pulled him up to his feet without straining.

"Harai variation," she said simply, releasing his hand.

Derek blinked, trying to clear the fog from his head. "You do judo?"

"A little," Claire replied.

Somewhere near the wall, one of the older brown belts let out a single, involuntary bark of laughter at the colossal understatement of the wording. Claire shot a quick, flat glance over her shoulder. The laughter died instantly.

Derek put a hand on his hip, rubbing his side where he had impacted the mat. His brain was furiously trying to reconstruct the physics of the last ten seconds. "You... you let me get the body lock."

"Yes, I did," Claire confirmed.

"Why?" he demanded, genuine confusion masking his embarrassment. "Why would you give up the dominant grip?"

"Because you wanted it so badly," Claire said.

Derek stared at her. "That doesn’t make any sense. Why give me what I want?"
