"I know she found records that were never supposed to exist. Payments to officials. Transfers between companies that had no legitimate business with one another. Names of people who publicly claimed to be enemies but secretly benefited from the same criminal network."
"Was Victor Kane involved?"
Samuel looked directly at her.
"Victor was involved in many things. But the person who frightened your mother most wasn't Victor."
"Who was it?"
"A man named Adrian Cross."
The name meant nothing to Isabella at the time.
Samuel explained that Adrian had been one of the architects behind the financial structure of Victor's empire. Unlike Victor, who preferred to dominate a room through intimidation, Adrian operated quietly.
He made phone calls.
He moved money.
He arranged meetings between people who pretended never to have met.
And he ensured that whenever a scandal emerged, the evidence pointed toward someone else.
"Your mother discovered that Adrian had been stealing from the organization while convincing Victor that the money was being used to expand their operations," Samuel said.
"Why would Victor allow that?"
"Because he didn't know."
Isabella frowned.
Samuel continued.
"Victor believed he controlled the entire organization. Adrian made sure he saw only what Adrian wanted him to see."
"What happened when my mother discovered the truth?"
"She copied the records."
"And then?"
Samuel's expression became troubled.
"Then she disappeared."
He slid a small envelope across the table.
"Your mother gave me this before she vanished. I kept it because I was afraid that destroying it would mean allowing her to disappear a second time."
Inside was a photograph of Elena standing beside two men.
One was Victor Kane, much younger and without the scar on his face.
The other was Adrian Cross.
On the back, Elena had written a date and a short sentence.
If anything happens to me, the original ledger is still out there.
For the first time in ten years, Isabella had a direction.
She also had a name.
And she was beginning to understand that Victor Kane might not be the only person she needed to confront.
Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Curtain
Adrian Cross had become a respected businessman.
He owned investment companies, luxury properties, and several charitable foundations. His name appeared in newspapers beside politicians, celebrities, and influential executives.
He donated money to hospitals.
He sponsored scholarships.
He attended charity galas and spoke about responsibility.
Few people would have connected him to the criminal organization that had operated in New York two decades earlier.
Isabella studied him carefully.
She discovered that Adrian's businesses had grown rapidly after Elena disappeared. Several companies linked to him had acquired properties that once belonged to Victor's associates.
She also found evidence that money continued moving through a complicated network of companies, some of which had been established years earlier.
Adrian had not abandoned the old system.
He had modernized it.
The more Isabella learned, the clearer the picture became.
Victor believed that he ruled the city.
Adrian believed that Victor was merely a useful distraction.
The criminal boss attracted attention. His reputation frightened rivals. His violent history made him an obvious suspect whenever something went wrong.
Meanwhile, Adrian moved money through legitimate businesses and cultivated relationships with people who could protect him.
If the organization collapsed, Victor would be blamed.
Adrian would walk away with the wealth.
And if anyone discovered the truth, Adrian had already arranged for the evidence to disappear.
Isabella began quietly gathering the records that could expose him.
She never contacted the authorities without first considering the risks. Some of the people who had investigated Victor years earlier had suddenly abandoned their cases. Others had been transferred, discredited, or pressured into silence.
She knew that simply handing over a folder might not be enough.
She needed evidence that could be independently verified.
She needed copies stored beyond her control.
And she needed to understand what Adrian was planning next.
That opportunity arrived when a former associate of his contacted her.
His name was Michael Voss.
Michael had once managed several warehouses connected to Victor's shipping network. He had left the organization years earlier and now lived under a different name.
He agreed to meet Isabella in a hotel lobby.
"I know what you're looking for," he said.
"Then you know why I'm here."
Michael glanced toward the entrance.
"Your mother was close to finding the original ledger. Adrian knew it. Victor didn't."
"Where is it?"
"I don't know the exact location. But I know Adrian spent years trying to recover it."
"Why didn't he destroy it?"
"Because he never found it."
Michael leaned closer.
"The ledger contains more than stolen money. It connects Adrian to people who publicly condemn organized crime while secretly benefiting from it. If it becomes public, he loses everything."
"Then why hasn't he come after me?"
Michael's face changed.
"Maybe he already has."
Isabella said nothing.
Michael looked at her with genuine concern.
"Listen carefully. Adrian doesn't threaten people unless he has to. He makes them believe that their lives are ordinary until one day they discover that every door they thought was open has been closed."
He stood.
"If you find that ledger, don't take it to Victor."
"Why not?"
"Because Victor may be the only person who can help you. But he's also the man who allowed your mother to disappear."
Michael walked away before Isabella could ask another question.
That night, she received an anonymous message.
It contained a photograph of her grandmother's apartment.
The apartment had been empty for years.
Someone had been there recently.
And someone wanted Isabella to know it.
Chapter 6: The Invitation
Three days later, a black envelope arrived at Isabella's office.
It contained a single card.
